MJSailors Posted December 27, 2018 #4 Share Posted December 27, 2018 I have been to Bermuda many times and have not seen any hairbraiding done near the port or at the beaches. Bermuda is very different from other islands that are part of cruise ship itineraries. It is a lovely country located far from the Caribbean. Therefore, the culture is different with British influence.

jewags Posted December 27, 2018 Author #6 Share Posted December 27, 2018 Thank you! Years ago I saw it there, but I wasn't sure now. I will look for salons as well.

Therefore, the culture is different with British influence. Bermuda is my favorite island destination and one of the reasons is that it is NOT a Caribbean island and has a different culture. I love the Caribbean, too - but for twenty years I have gone to Bermuda when I wanted a quiet, serene, refined experience with breathtaking vistas unencumbered by high-rise hotels or casinos. One of the most disappointing things to me in recent years is that, seemingly in order to appease tourists who are expecting a traditional Caribbean "island vibe" and activities when they visit, Bermudians have started to incorporate more Caribbean features (e.g. hair braiding, generic souvenir shops (filled with trinkets made in China), Caribbean musical influences, opening a Diamonds International 😲, etc.) If only folks would research destinations before choosing a cruise, no one would be disappointed. Not every island country has the same history, heritage, customs and culture. It's wonderful that there is such a variety - and IMO it's sad that any islanders may feel the need to become homogeneous in order to compete in the tourist industry. The Caribbean is fabulous, loud and colorful and it feels like a party everyday - which is wonderful when that is what you need! But Bermuda is something special and different, and I really hope it never changes.

Son of a son of a ... Posted December 27, 2018 #9 Share Posted December 27, 2018 Notwithstanding the professed righteous indignation on this thread, the Ministry of Education in Bermuda offers courses on hair braiding to the community. Last winter it cost $60.

OceanBlueWaters Posted December 28, 2018 #12 Share Posted December 28, 2018 Whether there is Hair Braiding in Bermuda (or not), here is my opinion... I have said this before...I would NEVER get my hair braided by locals walking and soliciting (in any Port). Oh sure they are "cheap", but they do not wash their hands in between "clients". Who knows what is under their fingernails! Nope. No way. I want no part of that stuff in my head/hair. JMO. My solution: I simply went to the on board Hair Salon (I was on Escape and Disney Wonder when I felt the need to get my hair braided.) LOL! Oh sure, it was a bit pricey (around $85.00, including tip on Escape and only a few braids) but it was amazing, worth it, and no worries about cleanliness/hygiene. The view was amazing also while she did it. Overlook Atlantis while getting my hair done?! Win Win! I am on vacation. Ahhhh.... Anyway, be sure to tip your Stylist if you want that Service on board. Apparently, they only get paid if they "work". I asked her if my tip/money was going directly to her, and she said "Yes". I smiled. She was lovely. JMO on Hair Braiding 🙂

JMO on Hair Braiding 🙂 Salons in Bermuda do hair braiding. The reason why some think there is no hair braiding in Bermuda is that locals don’t walk around soliciting hair braiding or anything else. In that sense it is not like the Caribbean. No one will bother you on the beaches for hair braiding, CDs or whatever. I had seen hair braiding once at the Harbour Nights festival and once or twice a Horseshoe Bay but not regularly and the hair braiders were low key. They had a sign up and you would have to go to them. I can’t answer the OPs question about where to go for good quality hair braiding, op didn’t ask for cheap, but I believe there likely are salons in Bermuda that do good quality braiding. I hope it is not a sign that Bermuda is loosing its’ character to garner tourists’ interest. MJSailors Posted December 28, 2018 #15 Share Posted December 28, 2018 To continue... We have been vacationing in Bermuda for thirty-five years. During our latest vacation there this past Summer,we were pleased to find the scenery, sights and people we met have retained the welcoming character we experienced on our first visit in 1983. Why the lecture about everything else? Geeze. People here are so dramatic...
