Viking Sky

Recommended Posts

Just seen the awful news about the Viking Sky adrift off Norway. According to the bulletin all 1300 passengers and crew are being airlifted as rescue ships cannot get near due to the winds.  Hope to goodness everyone is safe.

Have to query the sense in running cruises in this area that is still winter..ish.  Do they do cruises in the Caribbean in hurricane season?  Engine failure but you have to think 'what if'?  Another consideration with cheap cruises (not necessarily this one) is what is the weather going to be like? Also images on the other thread of planters sliding backwards and forwards and ornamental trees? Surely these things dont need to be mobile like tables and chairs and should be secured down not to become projectiles. Ceiling panels falling down???? life jackets AND hard hats. Really hope all concerned get back safely.

Just watched it on news. North sea in March.......NO.

New ship and in normal conditions would have probably ploughed on thro the storm.

Seems shes managed to anchor and get one engine going so looks likely she'll limp into nearest port when swell dies down. Hope it's nobodies first cruise. Lol

why were they in these waters with winds like this?

Damned if you are and damned if you are not. Last year on Discovery we did not get to the North Cape because of a predicted storm. Some passengers complained about it. The Sky would have been fine if the 'engine' problem had not happened. Maybe not an engine but electrical distribution like discovery had on the way to the far east. I think Sky has power from 3 engines now. S*ds Law in all its glory

I believe they were in the Norwegian Sea and at least one other ship did NOT go out..the storm was predicted and comfort and safety of passengers should come over the "schedule" New ships and New planes have lots of problems...sometimes more than older ones.

they do the north sea off Norway and above it  in winter months so they get  to see the northern lights.    you cant see them in the summer because it is permanent  daylight at that time of year. the ship would have coped just fine  if not for engine failure
