Bluestar01 Posted April 13, 2019 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2019 Hello, We'll be cruising to Alaska late Aug, first timers, coming from Ohio. What would the experienced cruisers recommend in terms of packing? Also, will be visiting Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway. Kids are hoping to see whales, bears, dog sledding, & Glaciers. Where & what are the best chances for these activities. Thanks
CruiserBruce Posted April 13, 2019 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2019 As discussed here daily, it is all about layers. The end of August will be getting cooler and wetter, so the comments about the outer layer being wind and waterproof get more and more important.
skrufy Posted April 13, 2019 #3 Share Posted April 13, 2019 Pack for warm weather, cool weather and rainy weather. Pack layers. Dining on an Alaska cruise is ultra casual, you can pretty much wear what is comfortable for you. The guaranteed way to see whales and bears ( bears not guaranteed )and dog sledding is to book excursions. If at all possible choose a ship that goes to Glacier Bay. The other glaciers are sometimes blocked by ice and you can’t get close or even in to see them. No problem ever getting into Glacier Bay. From Juneau, you can take a cab to Mendenhall Glacier. A 15-20 minute ride Our last trip we did a whale watching/ bear excursion from Icy Strait Point, it was spectacular. Juneau and Skagway are good whale watching ports. We saw a few whales sailing the inside Passage. You have to be in the right place and right time on the ship. Check all the excursions and then ask questions about specific ones here. Whales can show up anywhere. A short story. One week prior to our stop in Ketchikan a group of killer whales were swimming around in the channel, just off the dock area.

Melinda Brasher Posted April 19, 2019 #7 Share Posted April 19, 2019 I agree with others about layers. Here's my advice: https://www.melindabrasher.com/2019/03/packing-for-alaska-cruise.html
