Travel insurance on NCL

Does anyone have any experiences using travel insurance other than what is offered by NCL?  We’ve always purchased what they offered but have heard of many problems settling claims. Any suggestions for alternate coverage would be greatly appreciated

Here is a link to the Travel Insurance section of CC:

https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/499-cruisetravel-insurance/

Many of us strongly recommend third party insurance, especially if you are doing any *separate* additional travel pre- or post- cruise, which probably wouldn't be covered by cruise line insurance.

We recommend using an insurance broker to get help finding the best policy for your own needs.  (There is no additional charge.)

We use https://tripinsurancestore.com/ which we learned about several years ago here on CC.

We've gotten policies through them with Travel Insured.

And [unfortunately] we can speak of their prompt payment of claims, including some  large ones.  And that's what really counts.

Working with a TA check out the options there ---

Have a motor/auto club membership check that out ---

Be careful in getting too much insurance and having the insurance companies

argue out the co-ordination of benefits (overlapping coverage) ---

Using a major credit card for payment check out what is available there ---

Flying by airline - what part of that is covered ? ---

Getting at least a bare minimum luggage/baggage insurance maybe helpful ---

Make an educated Casino bet on the amount and what you need to cover any health issues ---

Consider whether you want to cover replacing the trip (do-over) or escaping with nothing lost ---

In a more expensive cabin (suite) - the bare bones or the full enchilada coverage ? ---

Just some of the things to consider ---

Pardon do you feel LUCKY ? ---

Better to have the insurance and not need it than to be without it and need it urgently !

I get to speak up on this one here.  Get it.  Always.  But keep an eye open.

Last trip, DW fell on day 5 of 7 and broke her arm badly enough to need a shoulder replacement.  Insurance we had covered through the last day of the trip.  So while we were several thousand out-of-pocket for an injury that happened on the trip, because they didn't schedule surgery for the day we arrived back on shore we didn't get back any of it.  Best they covered was the ER visit, where they said "have some pain meds and go see an Orthopedic specialist, we're not gonna touch that thing."

Even the TA's not using them anymore.

That is horrible!  Do you mind/can you say what company that was?

Seeing as I'm unlikely to see another dime from them at this point: Berkshire Hathaway.

The caveat here is maybe, MAYBE they offer other policies with different coverages and we just "got a Whammy" with the way that one was structured; but for the Love of Stitch I made VERY sure on the upcoming trip that the travel insurance covered "repairing what the trip broke."

The injury was obviously painful but obviously not life threatening, so while there was zero chance of an evacuation from the ship - it actually WOULD have been covered.

I didn't even realize they sold trip insurance.  I will definitely be looking to make sure the insurance I choose in the future covers after also.  I hope DW is back to normal!

I go with Nationwide cruise insurance. I've never had to file a claim so I'm not sure on how good they are.

I use insuremytrip to find plans. Usually I have success with the brokers but yesterday one told me some information that wasn't correct. It was general info. It didn't make sense so I called back and spoke to someone else.

I love Nationwide Luxury Cruise plans. Just used "cancel for any reason" a few weeks ago and they paid promptly and with a very easy process. I would never buy insurance from the cruise line as part of what you are protecting yourself from is them 🙂

I have to chuckle at the way you phrased that, but it is, in part, true! :classic_wink:

Third party all the way... NO conflicts of interest!

(And no, it doesn't matter whether the cruise line insurance is really covered by some other insurer.  Even then, claims will still affect the bottom line of the cruise line, at a minimum in terms of their premiums.)

Her days of raising her left arm any higher than 90 degrees are OVER. Still working with a lawyer on a settlement.
