Paper products need O2 to decompose. In landfill, paper products last just as long as Styrofoam and plastics. But, plastics have a MUCH smaller carbon footprint to manufacture, and they don't require cutting down trees. Plastics are also much easier to recycle, and recycled plastic is much more useful than recycled paper products.

A quick google search: Plastic Versus Paper and Cardboard For instance: Production of both paper and plastic bags requires energy and in both processes waste is generated. ... Recycling is preferable to landfill, and much more paper and cardboard is recycled than plastic.

Well, I'm not necessarily saying one is better than the other but recycling is better than landfill and paper is recycled more than plastic. Agreed recycling is better than landfill. Paper is recycled more than plastic because we don't have enough plastic recycling centers. We don't have enough paper ones, as well, for that matter. But the percentage of plastic that the centers can handle is lower than that of paper. 3 hours ago, jimbo5544 said: From an ecology perspective there is When waste is not properly disposed of, then yes, plastic is worse than paper. However, the solution isn't switching to paper. The solution is making sure waste is properly disposed of. Which, of course, is the topic of this thread, to begin with. If cruise ships do not dispose of their waste properly, then, yes, switching to paper will decrease harm to the environment. This is cheap for them. Better to put the money into the proper disposal of waste, and not switching to less environmentally friendly alternatives. Decreasing the total volume of waste would help, as well. Along those lines, I've wondered about the tons of anti-bacterial wipes used on the ships. The environment would be better off if they stopped using them. And, I'm not convinced they do anything to prevent disease above basic sanitary practices. In fact, some studies suggest that they may cause more disease than basic handwashing, as they kill the good bacterial colonies as well as the bad. And, the good colonies do help prevent the spread of disease, as well. Of course, too many people don't practice good basic sanitary practices.
