Black Flies and more in August?

Hi...  I searched but could not find any other posts.  Our cruise leaves in a week and we will be doing 4 on shore excursions (actually one is a whale watch trip).  Have any recent cruisers had issues with Black Flies and the like?   With the weather being so temperate I'd like to know what we may encounter and best steps to repel such insects.

When we were in Alaska in the first part of June, they were reporting black flies were just starting to appear. Don't know how long the season lasts.

We sailed 3 cruises to Alaska (mid June to first week of July) and encountered big black flies.  We were on our whale watching excursion, standing outside on the deck and were surprised to see the amount of flies flying around.
