Hello, I have never cruised with NCL and was hoping I could get some help as I have not found any answers just yet.

They may seem silly, and they likely are, but they will help me pack .

 

Do cabins have conditioner provided along with the shampoo? I've cruised other lines and know it is hit or miss .  I will be in Hawaii for 2 weeks so I rather not pack anything that isn't needed . If possible. 

How big is this ship? In the pictures it looks huge, but I haven't seen a passenger capacity anywhere. 
Does this cruise always sell out ? We are sailing in October and we are excited! I've never been to Hawaii and my mom (whom I am traveling with ) was there but it's been 50 years and I believe she was only in Honolulu. 
One last question. Is the ship friendly to elders who use a cane for walking longer distances?

We sailed on POA back in December. Had the best time. We splurged and got one of the suites and they did have shampoo. Even if you don’t pack it, they have ABC stores at every port and you can grab some there.  Compared to some of the newer ships, POA is kinda small, about 80,000 tons (some of the newer ships are 220,000+) and has about 2200 passengers. It does not have all the bells a whistles as some of the newer ships, like a casino but we were fine with that. Because it is such a port intensive cruise, it’s basically a floating hotel. The staff was great and made us feel like family.

Getting on and off in Oahu, your mom will be fine. The ports in Maui and Kauai are a bit of a walk to get to excursion pick ups, buses or taxis. In Kona on the big island, you have to take the tenders to get onshore. While on the ship, she should be ok, the pool area will we wet and slippery but the rest of the time it should be ok. They have 3 different sets of elevators and stairs and they have seating areas all over the place if she needs to take a break or rest.

Not sure if they sell out all the time but our travel agent said POA is one of their best selling cruises.

The ship will be “full” on most cruises. Slightly older demographic since school is on session. 

 

There is a combined shampoo/conditioner. If you are picky, bring your own conditioner. 

 

I hope your time in Hawaii is before your cruise. It takes a while to get over the jet lag from flying from the east coast. And it is a long flight. 

 

Hawaii II is our favorite non-cruise vacation spots. Simply beautiful. Enjoy!

Why bother to pack shampoo or conditioner? There are stores at all of the ports, buy it and leave what's left behind. We found that renting a vehicle was better than the excursions.  The rental company will pick you up at the port, take you to the lot, and return you to the ship at the end of the day.  We rented on Maui, Kauai, Big Island. We stopped at a coffee plantation and the owners told us to go a few miles further down the road to their friend and we received a private tour of a plantation without the hundreds of cruise passengers.  We visited Mauna Loa macadamia factory (no cruise people) went to Waimea Canyon (no cruise bus), were able to spend more time at Volcano National Park. Left the ship for sunrise at Mt Heleakala at least an hour after the buses left and made it up to the top in time to see the sunrise.  Just remember to check the "all aboard" schedule and you will enjoy your vacation. Make sure to get some shaved ice and when you are in Maui, get a Puka Dog

We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village pre-cruise and bought full sized bottles of the shampoo and conditioner they provide in the rooms for the cruise. We liked them so much we ordered more when we got home! The scent is amazing and helps us relive the trip.

The fact that there is no casino is not due to the age of the ship, but due to the fact it’s illegal. Because it only sails in Hawaii, they have to follow Hawaiian state law on gambling.

Yes, I know. Sorry if I implied the lack of casino was due to age. PoA is the only remaining med/large (not sure the class) US registered cruise ship allowing it to sail around Hawaii without visiting an international port (Jones Act). That is also why the alcohol policies are different as well.

They have to follow US law and they don't leave US water.
