LouiseB Posted September 27, 2019 #1 Share Posted September 27, 2019 Hi I was completing my guest information today on the cruise personalised and noticed it gave me the choice to either be charged in dollars or my home currency of pound sterling. What’s the best way to do this so I am better off. I have no idea! Thanks in advance for your help.
CruisinFinsUp Posted September 27, 2019 #2 Share Posted September 27, 2019 In our experience we always choose $USD and allow our bank/ credit card to perform the exchange to Canadian Dollars. That way we know exactly what rate / fee we are charged on top of the current market exchange rate. We have one card that charges 2.5% and another that charges 0% but has fewer other perks. If you allow Princess to do the conversion you may be subject to additional fees higher than what you would pay otherwise. Some people here have said that the Princess rate is upwards of 3%. I don't know for sure myself what it is.
riffatsea Posted September 27, 2019 #3 Share Posted September 27, 2019 When traveling it is usually best to let your own credit card do the conversions. You don't want a hotel or cruise line to do it for you!
hansi Posted September 27, 2019 #4 Share Posted September 27, 2019 Definitely let the cc company do the conversion. Anyway, definitely for me in the UK where I don't pay a loading charge.
denmarks Posted September 27, 2019 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2019 Never let the company you are dealing with do the conversion. That includes ships and shopping. Your bank will always convert at a better rate.
