Ive never sailed on CARNIVAL, so I cant say. After going on a cruise last week with my "mother in-law" (her first) I would suffice it to say, she'd be pretty darn happy on ANY cruise. TrinaLC Posted June 17, 2004 #52 Share Posted June 17, 2004 I am a corporate lawyer, DH is also a professional, our combined income is close to 500k/year, we live in NYC and are used to fine dining, we are extensively well travelled, ya di ya di ya di and we LOVED our recent Carnival cruise enough to book another one later this year. We went on the cruise to enjoy ourselves, and we did. We are book readers, not partiers, and managed to find many quiet spots on board where we could relax in peace. Sure, the party was going on around the pools, in the casinos, but that's not our thing, so we didn't participate. (We did enjoy some people watching while others did though!) I saw no improper behaviour, no drunken guests; just people enjoying themselves. And the food was good, at worst, to excellent, at best. And again, this is a NYC gal with an expense account - BTW, I do not say this to put down the blue collar beer drinkers! I love beer as much as the next person, and I'd never mention my profession, income, or anything else, except to demonstrate to fair minded people that the anti-carnival nitwits are completely out of their gourds. People, get over yourselves. I'm ashamed for those of you who have no class when it comes to looking down your nose at "blue collar workers". We've cruised many times, from Hawaii to the Greek Islands and South America, on various lines. Those who try to strut like a peacock are, in reality, trying to better their own feelings of insecurity. I will not post here again, but I had to see this post for myself when it was brought to my attention. We have taken our married children and their families on cruises, and will soom embark on a Carnival ship with our teenage grandchildren. They are all different but the only one I wasn't crazy about was NCL. For the money, you can't beat Carnival. We also eat out a great deal and I thought that the food on Carnival was as good as Celebrity and sometimes even better. It was just a little bigger than one of Galaxy's lifeboats and looked like it could be in for some trouble should an "Ocean Breeze" come along!!! Since I'm going on my first Carnival Cruise, will I have to bring an empty beer can with me to pour my drink into? I'd certainly welcome my MIL on any cruise I take for she could probably beat any cook in the kitchen, hands down. Take a look back at when you took your "MIL" class cruise. That may explain why that set of passengers behaved differently than other cruises. I don't think it has anything to do with the corporation, but more with the calendar. True, they do attract fewer families and many times a more partying group but the cruises to nowhere are generally more subdued. Luckily for Carnival the drunken frat party atmosphere has all but disappeared. I don't think m-i-l would do so well with all of the ladders, etc. I dunno, though. Dad kept on sailing them again and again for 33 years, so ther emust have been something good about it. Just about any cruise would be better than no cruise, as far as I'm concerned. Ok lets sum this up - in reply to the original question - it all depends on your mom-in-law! Does she like dancing till 3am or goes to bed at 9pm? What age range does she enjoy mixing with - what age is she and how active if at all? Generally avoid (for seniors over 60 yrs old) NCL, RCCL, Carnival & possibly even Princess. That said I myself have been on all the above and am going again but I am active and also prefer the below mentioned if the itineraries are the ones I want. Recommend HAL, Celebrity and possibly Princess. Hope this helps & happy cruisin'! I was not bragging, I was just pointing out that Carnival has really raised the bar, and how I found their food to be great, and that I'm not just comparing that to "run of the mill" restaurants. Gee..Get a grip. The point is, that I get really sick of people generalizing and thinking that Carnival cruisers are just a bunch of Country bumpkins and poor people that can't afford any better. It's really sad that people won't experience things on their own, and rely on old reputations. From what I have heard, Carnival has really worked to improve their product while other lines have stopped trying as hard, and have instead relied on their past reputation. I apologize for maybe coming off as high and mighty - I was just trying to point out that intelligent, professional, and well-rounded people do sail on Carnival. Look at the rest of this post - there are a lot of us Carnival sailers that have decided to speal up. I honestly experienced a lot of great cruisers on my cruise. I am so glad that I didn't heed the warnings of all of the people that told me to avoid Carnival at all cots. I would have missed out on a wonderful experience that taught me a valuable lession. You should always make up your own mind rather than be a sheep. Also, I wish I had my Mother in Law around. She was a great MIL and a great friend. She lost her battle to cancer at the age of 55 last year. I guess I was lucky that I actually had a MIL that loved me and appreciated me. I know she would have loved to experience a Carnival cruise, I would never stick her on a cruise full of a bunch of snooty, better than thou art people- that would have brought her down. ??????????? I think for the mainstream lines Royal Caribbean's Voyager and Radiance class ships are commanding the highest fares. I think, for some, bashing another line or person makes the basher feel superior. Yes, I am a Carnival fan. Why? Not because I am a blue collar worker or because I live in a trailer park. The main reason, most of the people I have cruised with on Carnival are genuine and like to have fun. That's what I go on vacation for. If they drink Budweiser, so what? That's their choice. I have never once run into any obnoxious drunks on any cruise. I have run into quite a few snobs though that do believe they are better than everyone else on the ship. While on our last cruise on the Miracle we met someone who was actually cruising with his wife and mil who was 86 years old. He had originally booked a cruise on HAL and she refused to go.....said there were too many old people on there. So....there you have it.
