Hi if Discovery docks at Bayonne N.Y for her two days in New York ,have any one done excursions to the City, 

have been told you can catch the ferry across the Hudson to Manhattan and do your own thing, or would 

you rather do ship tours, just a thought.

Personally prefer to do our own thing but it depends on how much walking you can do. We had 3 days in NY and walked everywhere or took the tube.  Get a map and plan a route. Some friends recently visited on a Princess cruise and they said the Hoho bus was good.  We flew into Newark and took the Greyline bus into Manhattan but our hotel advised they could book us a taxi back to the airport for the same price as the bus (we were 4 people) so we did this.

Looking at Google maps for Bayonne it is about 5 miles from the cruise terminal to the ferry. Information about the Cruise Terminal (http://www.cruiseliberty.com/passenger_info.html#parking ) says that you cannot walk through the port to the terminal, will need a taxi if you don't have a car!  Even if you plan to use public transport you have to start with a taxi.

 

Looking up taxi fares it is about $25 to the ferry terminal  and about $50 to go to Mahatten - and the ferry fare is $13 single.

So may be better to just get the taxi?

But apart from this Do it Yourself in Manhatten seems a good idea.

We usually DIY unless distance, timing, logistics or other factors make it too complicated or not possible at all.

For NYC we thought the port timings disappointing especially if they would be for a first visit to NYC.

 

Depending on your sailing, you either have a long first day (arrival 0700) but a short second day (departure 2pm) or you have a short first day (arrival 2pm) and only a slightly longer second day (departure 4pm)

 

Given the port location and the logistics, combined with fairly short times in port either on day 1 or day 2 depending on itinerary and date, you will need to do a fair amount of transport research to help you decide if you want to do a mix of DIY and shorex, or only shorex, or only DIY.

It will be interesting what excursions Marella come up with, even better if Discovery docked at Manhattan .

We docked in Manhattan a few years ago at the end of a Canada/New England itinerary with Princess.

 

Sailed right in at dawn, past the Statue of Liberty, and docked close to an outdoor air/sea museum.

 

It meant we ended our itinerary on a high instead of a low and we also had a few days to enjoy the city before flying home.

 

Sorry your won't have the same experience, but for anyone not yet booked, there are other cruise lines worth a look if only for comparison.

 Totally agree edinburgher NCL do similar at half the price, am just waiting for a price drop from Marella, even our winter cruise and stay from Barbados next year we have jumped ship and going with Virgin and carnival.

There are actually three NYC cruise terminals.

 

Worth checking their cruise schedules before booking if sailing into Manhattan is important to you, as it may be that not every ship belonging to a specific line will dock in the same location as others in the same fleet.

 

The Cape Liberty (Bayonne) one is separate from the NYC Cruise website which shows ships going into Manhattan and Red Hook Brooklyn.

I would hope that as they say New York City it will hopefully be the Manhattan Terminal which would be much easier for a tourist call independent of Marella excursions. Brooklyn is still in NYC but the surrounding area  was not very nice (at least it wasn't a few years ago but may have improved?). Bayonne is in New Jersey and appears to be almost exclusively Royal Caribbean ships (including Celebrity and Azamara); handy for Newark Airport but not a lot else!

Maybe as TUI have a 50/50 tie up with the ex RCL ships - the Discoveries then they will probably use the same port

Marella never went to Grand Turk or Amber Cove in DR until the tie up with RCL

Hi yes lets hope it will be Manhatten, but i don,t think so only last week i saw the live web cam and wo and behold Mein Shiff 1 was docked in Bayonne ,same berth as Anthem use, even the front cover of there 2021 brochure is very misleading showing Discovery doing a 360 by the statue of liberty, she won,t even go up that far hey ho never mind roll on Christmas.

The 50/50 partnership is limited to TUI Cruises (Mein Schiff 1-...) the former RCCL and Celebrity ships now with Marella Cruises are wholly owned by TUI companies.

I wouldn't think any tie up between RCCL and TUI had any role in Marella scheduling calls at Amber Cove and Grand Turk cruise ports as they were developed and are partly or wholly owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC.

Agreed! We will just have to wait and see where they will call at for 'New York City'. After all some cruise companies say they are calling at London when they actually go to Southampton, Dover or Harwich!

Hi went into my local travel agent and ask the Manager for more information as the regards of were Discovery will be docking in N.Y. she said leave to me, next day phoned me back have spoken to various people on our cruise team and she said (port of new york) in that case it will mean Manhattan, well lets wait and see.
