Mibele Posted December 20, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2019 Anyone aboard the Viking Star since they had a short dry dock this month? Boarding on January 10 and just wondering what was done to the ship. Will she have that new car smell? 🙂 Thanks in advance!
SrCruizer Posted December 20, 2019 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2019 Mandatory dry dock every 5 years. Probably more to make sure all mechanical systems running A-OK. Chances are won’t know any differences as a passenger.

Leotraveler Posted December 21, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 21, 2019 Just came on the Ship today. Was told the maintenance was predominantly mechanical/technical, but they did say some of the carpets and flooring were replaced, specifically at the World Cafe and infinity pool bar (Aquavit?). What a beautiful Ship! It’s understated elegance is fabulous.
Peregrina651 Posted December 21, 2019 #5 Share Posted December 21, 2019 How about the cabins? I'm wondering if they have reconfigured the V and DV closets they have replaced bedding, carpeting and upholstery I guess I will find out in a few weeks...

Chances are won’t know any differences as a passenger. The 5-yr drydock is for routine maintenance of the hull, including pressure washing and re-coating, inspecting tanks, routine maintenance/cleaning of HVAC, galleys and annual re-certification, etc. However, since the ships no longer receive short maintenance periods each year, they also complete major capital projects in the passenger spaces - this can be replacing large volumes of carpet, re-modelling a lounge/public space, new mattresses, new or re-upholstered seating, etc. If they have capital funding available, they may also upgrade the ship to match the newbuilds - planetarium, extra drawers, etc. Being a first drydocking I would expect to see carpet renewals in high traffic areas, some upholstery, but not much other work.

Since we are talking about Viking, I'll let you know how close your expectations are to reality in just a few weeks--update your data banks, so to speak. 1
deec Posted December 21, 2019 #8 Share Posted December 21, 2019 I would so love if they added the drawers for the v and dv cabins! We were on the Sea last December and some of the public areas needed attention...chips in the tile floors and some carpets and upholstered furniture. The carpet and chairs in the cabin were not pristine...not terrible but needing some attention. However, we are new to ocean cruising and out other two Viking Ocean Cruises had been the brand new Sky and Sun!
