American Airlines question

I flew in basic economy too, although I was alone.  I got a decent seat, by backpack easily fit under the seat, and my neighbors were fine with me getting up for the restroom occasionally.  I drank a beer, enjoyed the buzz, and played Angry Birds on the seatback screen for much of the flight, although during the last hour, I watched LAX and ORD slowly come into view.

One thing that helped me is summer weather.  I was fine in shorts and a T-shirt, even at chilly high altitudes.  Which means there was no coat to fuss around with.  In winter, I'd possibly spring for normal economy, to get the overhead space for my coat and/or my backpack that'd be too large to fit under the seat.

You might be happy to know that American has removed the restriction concerning overhead usage with a basic economy ticket.  Of course, there has to be room.

I already knew that.  That's why I picked American.  My backpack was pretty big and stuffed to capacity, so I had doubts if it would fit under the seat in front of me.  But it fit, just barely.  That's where I preferred to have it, anyway, so I could reach into it whenever I want, rather than bother my seatmates to get into the overhead compartment.

I actually had second thoughts about American, since last time I flew with them, they damaged the outside of my suitcase.  But the notion of paying to pay to use the overhead swayed me in its favor over United.  The flight times were slightly better too.
