royal65 Posted January 15, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2020 I'll be in Lahaina in early Feb. In observing whale activity, is morning or afternoon better, or does it make any difference?

Generally early morning. We use Capt Steves and usually go out at 7:30am. They breach all day, but you get a lot of muggings (close encounters) in the morning. Beachiekeen Posted January 15, 2020 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2020 If you do morning, you can walk around Lahaina after and have lunch before it gets too hot.
CruiserBruce Posted January 15, 2020 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2020 Agree with both above posters. We have also done Capt Steve's 7:30 trip many times, and will be doing it again a couple of times in later February. Morning whale watches are generally calmer, and less wind, which makes everything much better.
zelker Posted January 17, 2020 #5 Share Posted January 17, 2020 The main reason to go out in the morning is because the seas are calmer, thus making it easier to spot the whales. We've been out with Captain Steve's also but our favorite (Maui Adventure Cruises) - and who we're booked with again this trip - goes out of Lahaina Harbor, mere yards from where the tenders drop you. Captain Steve's goes out of the small Mala Boat Ramp, which is a little over a mile from where the tenders drop you, about a 20 or so minute walk. https://mauiadventurecruises.com/maui-whale-watch/
