We will stay in South Queensferry and we will also take the ferry to Inchkeith. My father was a great poet and I have a poem of his called London Exile where he says this The Gulls sweep Aberlady Bay From Inchkeith to the Isle of May The chevroned wild geese wing their way From Lammermuirs. I shall stand on Inchkeith and read his poem. Pauline loves poetry and my late dad wrote hundreds of poems.

There are at least 5 around York, all are well signposted.

Yep, my father wrote loads of poems as well. He was 52 when I was born, married 3 times. I met my half brother for the first time when I was 21. He didn't know I existed!! So I guess my name is Scottish and I was baptised in Edinburgh cathedral, although born in London.

jeanlyon Posted August 9, 2020 #3960 Share Posted August 9, 2020 (edited) OK, here is the original. Let me know if you can't understand the Scots words. London Exile Noo Winter’s blast an’ sleety rain Drum dourly on ma window pane The numbus’d moon, nigh on the wane Rides watery skies Distant the fleet electric train Shrieks owre the ties Ma slippered feet splay owre the rug Beside me, Nell, the collie dug Stretches an’ cocks enquiring lug At ilka cheep Then sniffs, an’ wi’ disdainful’ shrug Gangs off tae sleep Sune noo ma heavy eyelid blinks I steal awa’ for forty winks In dreams I’m back on Gullane links On hilltop high Ayont the Bridge the red sun sinks In saffron sky Northward the Paps o’ Fife haud sway Frae Inchkeith tae the Isle o’ May The gulls sweep Aberlady Bay In twilight ‘oors The chevroned wild geese wing their way Frae Lammermuirs O’ what wad I no’ gi’e tae be At Gullane whaur the winds blaw free Wi’ kindred spirits on the tee Some simmer morn an’ walk again that Lothian lea Whaur I was born Edited August 9, 2020 by jeanlyon 7

jeanlyon Posted August 9, 2020 #3962 Share Posted August 9, 2020 Glad you like it. Every time I read it I get tears. He was a very talented man. Piano, violin, poetry, magic tricks. Unfortunately he left when I was 6. They didn't get on. I didn't see him again until I was 21 and it was a wonderful reunion. Told me all about his life. Born in 1895, so lots to tell me. Was like listening to the Forsyte Saga!!!

jeanlyon Posted August 10, 2020 #3969 Share Posted August 10, 2020 (edited) Maybe - at every sound? Not sure. On a dismal note, this is what Salcombe looks like in the mornings. Edited August 10, 2020 by jeanlyon

Perhaps the local council should provide more bins. I don't think overflowing rubbish bins following a weekend is unique to Salcombe.

Rare Eddie99 Posted August 10, 2020 #3973 Share Posted August 10, 2020 I think Zap has a point. Yes, if there’s no bin space people should take their rubbish with them but, somehow, it appears to be human nature to want to leave it. After all, that’s what we’re used to. Litter bins aren’t a third millennium invention. Our bins overflow too. Lots of people and lots of people doing stuff outside that they wouldn’t do normally - meeting friends/family for a picnic when it would be more usual to meet in somebody’s home or at a cafe/pub/restaurant I know they’re cash-strapped but it feels like the ha’penny cost of more bins, more frequent emptying or skips would save the shilling cost of extra clear up or loss of future bookings
Dermotsgirl Posted August 10, 2020 #3974 Share Posted August 10, 2020 We’ve been for an early walk today before it got too hot, and combined it with breakfast at the M&S cafe to Eat Out to Help Out. We’ve just been having the discussion about rubbish. There’s loads of discarded masks on the pavements, verges and wooded areas. I don’t know why people can’t put things in bins or if the bins are full just take their rubbish home with them

They pay no Council Tax as they are on Business rates, so they dump their rubbish anywhere. Hey ho.
