Rare Miaminice Posted April 10, 2020 #76 Share Posted April 10, 2020 (edited) @WrittenOnYourHeart I listen to the daily podcast of Prof. Christian Drosten, one of Germany’s top virologist and actually the one who first discovered the original SARS virus. Extremely interesting, very down to earth and an incredible and comprehensible look at all the backgrounds. He also explains the latest studies and publications on the virus so a non-scientist can understand them. In one of the latest podcasts he mentioned exactly the same thing. In fact he mentioned that knowledge about probability of contact contamination comes as a byproduct of other recent studies and the majority of scientists agree that compared to the risk of aerosol contamination, contact contamination is so insignificant that no specific studies need to be conducted at the moment. People sometimes mix up information about traces (RNA) of the virus which can still be found with virus which is still infectious. Traces can Still be found after weeks. The imminent threat will be over someday. We will learn to live with the remaining risk. That I am sure of. Soon? Well, that depends on your definition of soon. My personal expectation is months rather than weeks. Years before we stop talking about it... Edited April 10, 2020 by Miaminice

Yet in North America, the mantra from health officials continues to be "wash your hands". While some belated encouragement is being given to the use of masks to prevent spreading the virus in case you are infected, washing your hands still tops the CDC's list of protective measure that everyone should take. Minimal risk doesn’t mean no risk!

True enough, but minimal risk shouldn't have received primary attention. If greater attention had been paid from the outset to the higher risk aerosol contamination, more effective preventative measures, such as social distancing, could have been introduced far sooner. Well, I can only speak for Germany. Distance and distancing was the #1 priority - next to early and extensive testing.
