cruzingqueen Posted February 9, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 9, 2006 I'm reading reviews for Jan 7-14, 2006 that say Hunky Dory is on the Zuiderdam, but reviews for the same time period on Volendam mention Hunky Dory. Now the Hunky Dory I know and love (Zuiderdam) is very good, but I don't think he can pull off this feat. Can someone clear this up for me? Thanks! Krazy Kruizers Posted February 9, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 9, 2006 You know, I was reading the same thing. I also wonder if someone else is now calling himself "Hunky Dory"? Wonder if we will ever know for certain?
FlorenceItaly Posted February 9, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 9, 2006 on the Volendam. I met Hunky Dory on the Zuiderdam, Dec, 3, 2005, and it was his first cruise back from vacation. Marie
ricksandy Posted February 9, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 9, 2006 When we walked on to the Zuiderdam Nov 19, 2005 Hunky Dory escorted us to our room. He said this was his first trip of a year-long contract. His identity was confirmed by Mr. Deering who was also on this particular cruise (but getting ready to change). He had the whole remember-your-name thing going on too. He is such a nice guy, meeting him and chatting with him was one of the MANY highlights of our trip! I guess it's possible, though, that assignments can change???
tlm Posted February 9, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 9, 2006 The Hunky Dory on the Volendam is not the "real" one. We sailed on the Volendam Jan 12 and when we got back I did a search on here for a picture of the "real" Hunky Dory and it was definitely not him. shonuf Posted February 9, 2006 #6 Share Posted February 9, 2006 In a conversation with Mr. Deering last week on the "O", he confirmed that Hunkey Dorey was back on the Zuiderdam.

Susan - I hope I have the opportunity to meet Mr. Deering next month on the Oosterdam. I just missed him on the Zuiderdam in December. He had left the week we were getting on. sail7seas Posted February 9, 2006 #8 Share Posted February 9, 2006 The fellow called Hunky Dory on Volendam is not the 'original'. I saw him several times at lunch on Volendam and he is not the Hunky Dory I have known from five cruises on Zuiderdam. I can understand the confusion. Krazy Kruizers Posted February 9, 2006 #9 Share Posted February 9, 2006 SO - the Volendam "Hunky Dory" - apparently he knows about the real one on Zuiderdam and hopes to become as popular as the real one by using that name???
sail7seas Posted February 9, 2006 #10 Share Posted February 9, 2006 The Hunky on VODM is very friendly but does not have the same 'manner' about him. His interaction with guests if fun but different that the original Hunky......as it should be. He's a different person. :)

dsawyer Posted February 9, 2006 #12 Share Posted February 9, 2006 Maybe every ship will have their own "hunky dory." :D You know - like Santa and all his department store "helpers" Isn't there a "yum yum man" on every ship?
jhannah Posted February 9, 2006 #13 Share Posted February 9, 2006 Isn't there a "yum yum man" on every ship? Yes, there is. But that's a generic position name ... not a nickname of a specific individual.
ReaganSkyesdad Posted February 9, 2006 #14 Share Posted February 9, 2006 Lisa, The "Hunky" that everyone loves and adores is alive and well on the Zuiderdam! Don't fall for cheap imitations, there is no other like the Zuiderdam's Hunky Dorey!:D
herb Posted February 9, 2006 #15 Share Posted February 9, 2006 Who is Hunky Dory? or is this an inside joke?
Orcrone Posted February 9, 2006 #16 Share Posted February 9, 2006 From HAL's website "... as part of our Signature of Excellence Program (SOE) Holland America is breaking ground with our cloning process. Being able to clone the best stewards, maids, etc. will reduce our training costs while still providing the 5 star experience our guests desire..." I spoke with the captain on my last cruise on the VolenZuiderBeaverDam. He confided that the experiment was not 100% successful and Hunky Dory is the last clone for the foreseeable future. Orcrone Posted February 9, 2006 #17 Share Posted February 9, 2006 Who is Hunky Dory? or is this an inside joke?Herb, Not an inside joke. Hunky Dory is a steward who spends most of his time in the Lido of the Zuiderdam. He asks everyone their name and memorizes most of them. You can meet him once, return there several days later and he'll remember that you're Herb.
ReaganSkyesdad Posted February 9, 2006 #18 Share Posted February 9, 2006 Herb, There is a crew member with the name of Hunky Dorey. His indonesian name is to difficult to pronounce so he goes by this "nickname." He has this unbelievable talent of being able to recall names as he sees passengers. Amazing. Orcrone...that is the funniest thing I have read on here (or any board) yet! That's a hoot! Very creative, thanks for the chuckle.:)
michmike Posted February 9, 2006 #19 Share Posted February 9, 2006 I think I'm responsible for starting the confusion. One of the lido stewards aboard Volendam on our recent trip (1/22-2/1) would tell everyone that he was "hunky dory" when you asked how he was doing and did ask most everyone's name... SO.... I assumed that he was the genuine article and mentioned meeeting him, in my review. Had seen his name mentioned in posts in the past and wasn't aware that he was primarily on Zuiderdam as I don't pay any attention to Zuiderdam posts since we have no desire to cruise on the Vista class ships. So, just as with the "Louis Vuitton" bags you purchase at the vendor's plaza in St Thomas, I guess it pays to do your homework first. *L* I'll now go back to shooting flying monkeys at my co-workers, trying to figure out when I can justify my next HAL trip and searching for a decent source for bread pudding in west Michigan. Stakeout Posted February 9, 2006 #22 Share Posted February 9, 2006 it's our favorite ship.. just feel 'comfortable on it...been on it about a dozen times.. better half actually has the right count.. sorry to say starting in '07 Volendam will take over Canal r/t from Ft Liquordale.. at least according to HAL's online brochure I d/l with Maasdam doing the Caribbean 10 day runs.. Maasdam will be alternating itineraries like they used to do so makes a back to back very nice.. for those who would like to see HAL's '07 Caribbean brochure (pdf file) click on Full Screen ..then Table of Contents ... then go to page 32-33 .. page 33 actually has the 10 day cruises.. donh1 Posted February 11, 2006 #24 Share Posted February 11, 2006 Met him on the Zuiderdam on the Jan 14th Sailing. He was great. He puts a lot of effort into what he does best. It's one thing to call you by name but what was even more impressive was he asked for your spouse by name......... Don't forget to tip him. I did on the second last day and I hope others do the same....... He is definitely a character that makes a person smile.....:) :) :)
dexter Posted February 11, 2006 #25 Share Posted February 11, 2006 We met him on the Zuiderdam. He remembered all the ladies names, but he didn't remember mine. I don't blame him. He is one of a kind.
