Fully vaccinated but test positive before boarding

I apologize if this has been covered before.  We will be on the Apex, leaving from Greece in September.  We are fully vaccinated but wonder what happens if we test positive.  Will we still be able to board?  Thanks

From what I’ve read, no.

No they will not let you board and you can get $$ back for the cruise.

I'm sorry but why on Earth would you think they would allow positive tests to board? You will be given a refund for the cruise fare and sent on your way.

I wonder if the question was posed to the OP as. "Do you think a cruise ship should allow someone who tested positive to cruise and  then be your stablemate?"

You will not be allowed to board and sent on your way very quickly. What would be the point in us all having PCR tests if they were going to allow those testing positive to get on the ship anyway?  Why on earth if you tested positive would you even set off to go on holiday ?  Sorry if I'm sounding harsh or am I just missing something here?

You won't be allowed to board. You will be directed to a quarantine hotel designated by the Greek government and you will be required to be quarantined

"Mandatory isolation if they test positive for SARS-Cov-2, following a sampling test. In this case, the travelers and their travel companions are accommodated in quarantine hotels, where they will undergo further PCR testing to confirm the initial diagnosis. Guests will stay in seclusion hotels for a maximum of 10 days. The expenses of the accommodation in quarantine hotels are covered by the Greek state."

I'm hoping OP question was from being not aware of the fact that fully vaccinated can have as high (if not a little higher) viral loads than unvaccinated CDC report a week ago:

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7031e2.htm

This is sad news to most of us fully vaccinated hopes were that fully vaccinated would still have a small vial load (resulting in heard immunity) is they had a breakthrough case.

Not so in the above report:

Good news is most of us vaccinated will mostly have minimum symptoms (or non at all) if we have a breakthrough case. But, we can still spread the virus 😞

I am guessing that OP just wants to prepare in case he or his family tests positive for COVID before boarding the ship (as required for APEX in Athens). I am also scheduled to sail on APEX in September and even though I am fully vaccinated, I will voluntarily get tested for COVID within 72 hours of the sailing date here in the States. The idea is that, if I test for positive, I will simply stay home even though I already spent $10K between the cruise and flights. I will be disappointed but it's better than flying over to Greece, find out that you are positive for COVID right before boarding the ship and as result, I am quarantined in some random hotel designated by the Greek government.

Yeah I think a LOT of people were not aware of this as it is relatively new info just came in the last 2 weeks.   It is not worth to it to go on a cruise now when the test result is like playing a casino game.

The difference being, as many thousands of successful boardings show, your odds are still VASTLY better than the house's.

I understand.  We were on the Apex first cruise back in June with a group of 13.  Only four of us needed PCRs to travel because we were transiting through Heathrow, but still, we all had PCR's done the day before our flights. Though, it was not required for the whole group, it was the right thing to do.  BTW, only the four transiting through Heathrow were also tested upon arrival in Athens,  and then the next day we were all tested again by Celebrity. Did I mind? not at all.  IMHO everyone should be tested before any type of travel vaccinated or not.

Keep in mind that even though the efficacy for the vaccine when it comes to mild illness (including asymptomatic cases) is lower with Delta there it has not gone away.  So while there are more breakthrough cases, the vaccine is still preventing infection in many cases.

In those cases where breakthrough cases occur the vaccine is still effective in preventing serious illness in most cases (around 90% in preventing hospitalization and/or death, even with Delta).

The fact that there are breakthrough cases and that the viral load in those cases is as high as in the unvaccinated (though a study in Singapore indicates that the period were the vaccinated can infect others is shorter) makes it critical for people to apply other measures including masking and distancing.

So far!   The cruise lines are probably not releasing the statistic of how many were turned away last week, vs this week, vs next week, etc...   Because the number of total cases are going up, the number of passengers testing positive pre-boarding will go up as well.   Just not sure how much and when it will plateau out.

It may also mean that it takes a higher viral load to produce symptoms in vaccinated people. There may be a lower mean viral load after exposure in vaccinated people overall if every possible person exposed was tested. Difficult to figure that one out.

This is the right answer. You will not be sent on your merry way if you test positive in Greece. They will turn you over to the Greek government for a minimum 1 week quarantine. If you are lucky you will get a spot in a nice hotel if celebrity has arranged that. I know NCL is claiming they have a deal with an “upscale hotel” for quarantined passengers. No first hand reports yet though. I’m expecting the Greek cruises to be cancelled before too long though, with delta, the state dept warning and wildfires all going on. Apparently the EU is also considering banning Americans again.

Keep in mind that this was a study in Singapore who runs a very proactive contact tracing and testing programs.  The results in the study included both asymptomatic as well as symptomatic vaccinated individuals as well as unvaccinated.  The statistics were looked at by group.  Viral loading with Delta was considerably higher in both symptomatic and asymptomatic groups at similar level as unvaccinated.  Difference was viral load levels dropped off quicker for the infected vaccinated meaning shorter period of being infectious.

no one wants you on their airline or cruise ship if you test positive. I believe all the cruises are issuing FCC if you test positive before the cruise and I would expect airlines to as well. I don’t think you would ‘lose’ any money doing this. Would just have to reschedule your trip.
