Carnival Ship “Carnivale” Vintage 1979 Pictures (from cruise November 1, 1979)

I worked in the gift shop on the Carnivale back in 1980, then managed the shops on the Mardi Gras and Festivale.  It was by far the most fun I've ever had in a work place.  Back then girls were only allowed to work in the gift shop or the casino, officers were encouraged to "mingle" with female passengers, and we were allowed access to the club (back then called the Disco) but were not allowed on the dance floor.

Things have certainly changed - my daughter worked one contract on the Glory a few years back as part of the entertainment staff.  When I cruised 2 weeks after she joined, we had to get written permission from security for her to even be near my cabin.  No more fraternizing - but then again male crew have lots of female crew to "mingle" with.

Great pictures! And to think I used to think cruise ships that size were massive!!!

The first time I saw a cruise ship (in person) was when we were staying in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on our first vacation out of the U.S. in the mid 1970’s. We were in a high-rise hotel on the east side of the bay (Tortise Club?).

On the first morning, I woke up and opened the curtains. Of course, the night before, upon arrival, there was no ships in port. When I pulled back the drapes and saw what (at the time) was a huge ship. I was determined that I would start cruising. I couldn’t walk fast enough over to the other side of the bay to see it up close.

We are now up to 53 cruises and counting.

Wow!! I have a long way to go to catch up to you! We're booked on the Mardi Gras in March, which will be cruise number 7 (although we did have 2 cruise cancelled due to Covid).

Wow, that explains why officers were all over the club/disco back in the day!! I started cruising in 85' and they definitely got a lot of attention, lol!

My new wife and I boarded the Carnivale on December 16, 1979 for our honeymoon.  We booked months in advance and were able to get one of the few rooms with a double bed.

WOW, That would have been funny if you had the bunk beds for a honeymoon! The beds look very short also.

It was a riot - I played wingman for a few of the officers every week - hang out with them in the club so people would think they were with someone until they could check out who they wanted to approach.  It was really quite funny.  Unfortunately they didn't have the greatest impression of us American girls - they could never understand that what happens on the ship doesn't happen in everyday life.  Same old double standard as you see today, but they were really alot of fun and soooo Italian lol!

Now I'm curious to know what happened on the ship!! Actually, I met a few of the cocktail waitresses back in the day and was taken down below into their area. I also met some musicians and dj's and became friends, they would take me down to where the real fun was!!! Ah, the 80s!

I wish they would bring back a "now" version of the old TV series "Loveboat".  :classic_biggrin:

I keep thinking they must since they are already airing the new Fantasy Island.  How can they not have a night of Love Boat and Fantasy Island?

Love vintage pics! Thanks for sharing.

If you would like to see more vintage pictures, I have posted some more under

“Other Cruise Lines”

the pics are from a 1982 cruise on Chandris Lines “THE VICTORIA” which is similar in size to the “CARNIVALE “.
