Looking for a day trip from Civitavecchia but NOT to Rome

So, our cruise has a day in Civitavecchia (9am-10pm). We have been to Rome multiple times and are looking for something else to do or some other place else to visit that is not Rome. Are there nearby little towns that we can get to by bus or taxi?

You could easily get to Tarquinia, an Etruscan town, by bus from the port.

 

If you haven't been to Ostia Antica you can reach that by train (regionale to Roma Ostiense followed by the Roma-Lido line to the site).

A couple of years ago, we took a bus to Tarquinia from Civitavecchia (found instructions here on CC).  We really enjoyed it.  Not crowded at all.

Another vote for Tarquinia and the tombs a little way from the village. Absolutely incredible.

Ostia Antica is on my list for the next time I make it to Rome like was suggested earlier...

 

i havent done much research, but it’s the seaside, there are bound to be some vacation towns nearby, depending on when your trip is, they will probably be bustling during vacation time and might be fun.

Another option is a bus to Bracciano to tour the castle and have lunch alongside the lake.  You can get a bus (the ride is between 60-90 minutes each way) that leaves you a short walk from the castle (less than half a mile).  There are several waterfront restaurants along Via Argenti about a mile walk from the castle.

Hire a car and drive up to Orvieto. Beautiful city. Under 2hr drive each way drive so plenty of time.

We have rented a car and driven up the coast and had a seafood lunch,  visited Tuscania, Tarquinia.  We really enjoy the area and Villa Farnese near Viterbo.  
if you don’t want to rent a car, Rome cabs does tours in the area and we enjoyed that. If you’ve  enjoyed the Etruscan museum and tombs at Tarquinia, Cerveteri is also worth a stop.

Orvieto is beautiful but it's difficult to reach by public transit, a car or car service is really needed unless you have a lot of time.

 

By train you have to go south into Rome and change trains to go back north to Orvieto.  You can get there by bus but it requires changing buses in Viterbo and coordinating bus schedules.

We are going to Orvieto again, it is really beautiful. If you have a car be sure to also visit Civita Di Bagnoregio, Great day out.

That is a fantastic port day itinerary (we have done it twice).  The OP might want to consider renting a car as driving that route does not involve driving in any major cities.

Went to Orvieto again this week. Car hire and fuel for the day €121 split between 4 of us!

Where did you hire the car?  We are in Civitavecchia and have a day to go to Orvietto...or a day when we are in Rome.   We are looking at a train..but the price you listed is very reasonable.  thanks

I highly recommend Orvieto as well.  It is amazing.  We rented from Hertz.  It was reasonable and rental went fine.  Office was pretty easy to find (our trip was August 2019, so do a bit of research)

Since the thread has moved into what to do with a rental car (our normal way of dealing with many European ports) there is another option from Civatavecchia which is a longer, but doable, drive.   With a long port day one can drive to Tivoli (about 1 1/2 hours each way) which is a terrific area for 1 or 2 days.  The primary tourist haunts are the Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa.  On a long port day those two attractions plus lunch would fill the day.  The drive means circling around Rome (on the ring road) but does not involve driving into Rome).  Tivoli is one of those towns we recommend for folks who have already been to Rome (a few times) and looking for a day with some major tourist sites.
