CRUISING WITHOUT AN IPHONE

Bingo!  I will be 80+ years old and still excited about the latest technology in devices.  I would have never dreamed back in the 1980s that one day we would carry a computer in our hands with MUCH more memory than clunkers had back then!  I'm still thrilled, all these years later, to carry a reader that holds several hundred of my favorite books.   

 

Age is a state of mind....and this 60 year old brain believes it's still 30 something.  😎

I find this contradicting  since all of my physicians utilize the MyChart app to schedule appointments, see lab results, monitor medication renewal, general communication and check in and co-payment at the office is done on a tablet.

Ahhh, the ever present and real struggle for all of us. 🙃 I've personally been losing weight and exercising daily for the past several months, and while my knees aren't exactly happy, my mobility is better and my energy up as well.  I've decided I want to maintain this.  I feel better physically than I have in a very long time.  So, there is hope!  🙂

I’ve found I always feel better when I walk each day.  Hubby & I just got back from 3 days in Baltimore to see the Sox & walked almost 30 miles on the trip.  Recovering from torn rotator cuff surgery that is not getting better any time soon☹️.  Sore and stiff but I’m done sitting around the house.  Zumba class starts in 2 weeks and I’m there!

I didn't used to use my phone on cruises.  I typically put it in the safe once we were on board.  With the new apps and menus online, and schedules, and the cameras being so good on phones now, I carry it in my pocket.  It's easy enough to cut off outside internet so the privacy is still there, but I find the app to improve my cruise experience a lot.  I can assign things to my schedule, check out the week's menus, chat with others on our cruise (for a fee) , etc.  I guess it's all perspective, but I think the new phones are especially good for old people 🙂  I can tell mine, any time, "remind me to..." and it sets up notifications for me.  I can also play a quick game, chat with my kids, check social media, etc. all from my hand and anywhere I am.  The new phones are also very easy to use.  But... I digress.

We're in the gym on the ship at least every other morning, before breakfast. 

 

We take the stairs whenever possible, walk the decks all day. The hardest part is turning down the third bread roll at dinner.  🙂  That's why I love longer cruises - not so much urge to eat everything, every night.

I remember my childhood phone number.  It was KEarny 8-4343.  Then it became WYman 8-4343.

 

We had a party line, but our phone rang only for us.

 

When we moved out of Bell range and went to United Telephone, we were asked if we wanted 2, 4, or 6 party.  Fortunately, a mistake was made and we got a private line.😀  Our neighbors next door got a two party line and for United  Telephone they had separate rings.  They were on the same line as a "baby nurse" (whatever that is/was) and the phone rang constantly at all hours.

That doesn't mean the Mayo Clinic and many others (vision specialists in particular) are wrong in their warnings. NOT a prohibition, just a caution about over-use. Does that contradict anything at all?

 

I spend maybe 2-3 minutes in MyChart most of the time I use it -- and I use it on my laptop, never on my smarphone (don't even have such apps installed).

 I have not seen anybody mention  music you can bring with you (on the phones or tablets storage so you do not have to stream).

Good for when you exercise on board or take a nap on deck.

 

Then you can play games of all sorts. We usually play arouns happy hour at an aft bar. Many you need the internet to conect.

 

The other use of technology, is with family, if I am watching the grandkids at night (I can do without shows) the kids can call to check on me! and on a big ship with the family people can be anywhere and the phone helps.

 

Oh, one can also bring a lot of books on a tablet. Thats great for a TA or TP.

and with Whats APP you can call via the internet or do face time, which makes the kids who worry a lot happy. Even if its only a 3 minute call. And we do not mind seeing the grandkids on FT either.

 

Only problems are when we ate more than a few time zones apart.

 

And its a quick and easy way to check on your daily schedule as we find we have a hard time quickly fining our paper trail of what we have going--especially when one day looks and feels like the next.

 ditto for important documents.

 

Finally, it, the App,  tells you "ships time".
