IMO, the better question is why avoid the porter

I know the porters do an outstanding job

Personally, I'd carry on a backpack and take all my rolling luggage to the porters.  Is there a reason you're trying to avoid porters?

Pro tip, always pack an empty duffle/gym bag in your luggage on every vacation, makes life easier in the event you unexpectedly buy something big and/or heavy, such as a gift.  On my last cruise, at the casino I won a big bottle of liquor raffle, the duffle filled with dirty clothes saved me a $150 overweight fee

As a fellow diver, my recommendation would be regs, dive computer, mask and snorkel in carryon. Put BCD, wetsuit and fins in the checked bags. Those are far more easy to replace if lost/stolen and are larger items. Don't forget about dive insurance in addition to trip insurance just in case. Don't bother with a knife (will be confiscated regardless of which bag). Also bathtubs work great for rinsing gear if you happen to have a suite.

Hope you have a blast.

But the better question might be- should you be doing that?  They really don't want to slow down the boarding process by having lots of people lugging around the large suitcases, which is why they ask people to check their suitcases outside.  At boarding time the elevators are crowded enough (as is the boarding area for that matter, at least as capacity gets closer to normal)!  Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

This was our first time carrying on our own bags and I can’t see us going back to checking them in. This was SO much easier. We boarded late (2:00) so there were no lines in the terminal and practically no one using the elevators. Plus we had everything in our cabin by 2:30. Easy!

Always carry my own suitcase and carry-on myself.
