Booking Two Cabins for Family

So we're looking to book on Royal Caribbean. There's 2 families traveling together and the other family will need 2 rooms, since they have a family of 6.

There's certainly a jump in cost pp between picking your own room vs. having RC pick it for you. But the family that needs 2 rooms will obviously want their rooms next to each other. BUT they don't really care WHERE on the ship those 2 rooms will be. Are they stuck paying the additional "pick your own room" cost to have the rooms next to each other?

And we were going to book directly with RC but is this where a travel agent could help?

Thanks!

Booking method does not matter.  If they want connected staterooms, they will need to pay to select.

YES. We booked a GTY almost 8 months ago, cabin assignment was yesterday and we sail tomorrow.  Royal now books GTY very close to sailing date as they just fill in what's left and allow little inventory for cabin changes.  If the other family is putting minors  in the second cabin you might have better luck by booking direct as Royal like kids next to or directly across from the parents. If the other family is booking a balcony they can put the kids across the hall in a cheaper interior cabin.  Book one adult in each cabin and then switch as soon as you board. Royal could not care less who sleeps where after you board.

Yes, children need to be near parents. In addition, I think that RCI requires that the booking for every cabin include an adult. That doesn't mean that everyone has to sleep in the booked cabin; it's common to book one parent or grandparent in each cabin with one child or more and then have keycards reissued aboard ship for the cabins that each person will actually use.
