Do you double tip?

We absolutely tip extra when there is outstanding service.  However, I am not like the rest of the internet walking around throwing $5's at every person with a nametag on.

We may give our steward and extra $20 or so but that is about it.  We aren't needy cruisers, they pretty much make the bed and swap the towels and the rest of the cabin is already in order.  They spend less than 10 minutes a day in our cabin.

For servers if I am just being handed a beer at the bar I might not tip anything extra.  If you make me a great martini during the pre-dinner rush you might get $5.  If a server is bringing me drinks to the table saving me a trip to the bar they get tipped every time.  It all varies, I still believe tips are proportional to service provided and not some some charity program.

My thoughts exactly. Everytime i read these big money tycoons talk about all the extra money they throw around it reminds me of Gilligan's Island and the Howells.

We tip extra because the service has always been above expectations.  We also pay the gratuity when we book the cruise and would not consider taking it off.  While making the cash budget for on the actual cruise, we plan to tip the room steward at the end depending on how long the cruise is, same for the MDR staff on the last dinner service night to split.  We tip extra when drinks are served in the casino, or at other venues - even when we get the DOU benefits.  We also tip for room service, as well as the staff at breakfast in the MDR which we enjoy every morning, especially on seadays.  The port porters also deserve a very nice tip although they are not associated with Carnaval.   We have always been known as very good tippers.  I don't say this to brag, and we certainly are not wealthy.  It's because some of our adult children have been employed and have careers in the food service and hospitality industry so we know directly how hard they work and the benefit an extra tip provides to them.   For us, the interaction we have with the staff throughout the cruise is what makes for such a wonderful experience.

Wow, I am glad to see all the overtippers here. I have not cruised in several years but I do remember that a the day the auto-tips were posted on the ship account, the line at customer service was a mile long. I wonder what these folks were doing?

i know tipping is going up after may 1st. i don't have a problem with tipping more. but usually we pay the auto grats and then give extra money to our cabin steward and sometimes bartender or waiter (if they have done a halfway decent job-i had one waiter who was horrible and he just got the regular grats).

we like to give the extra tips as cash so that carnival can't take anything. we never remove the grats totally.

so onto my question:

if we pre pay our grats, (even though we are sailing after may 1st, do we pay the old amount? cause i would prefer to pay the extra money in cash to them.

I pay the auto tip. I will tip my room steward extra if he provides great service and keeps the ice bucket filled. Will also tip the waiter at the diamond/platinum cruise party to get that extra drink or faster service. The party has been cut so short, it is a very rushed event.

If you prepay the gratuities prior to May 1, no matter the sail date, you will pay the old (current) amount.  If you sail after May 1 and haven't prepaid, your auto-tips will increase 50 cents a day.

I learned a long time ago that my life is better spent worrying about myself, not others.

We probably about double tip our steward and MDR waitstaff.  We slightly under double tip for specialty dining, I think, though I'm not really clear on how much of that charge is for service so it could be vastly under double.  I'm similarly unclear on how much cheers tips per non-alcoholic drink - it's about 75c for a total of 15, but that's the number I assign for alcoholic, so maybe we infinitely overtip on coffee?  If it's split evenly, then we probably slightly over double tip on beverages - I'm certain we do on alcoholic beverages.  Particularly in the casino where we often order two liquor drinks and two bottled waters for the pair of us - back to back in fewer than ten minutes is worth a fair bit when the casino is offering us free beverages. Any time saved in the casino is a legitimate cost savings 😉

The cheers package, steak house and chefs table I just booked all included tips. In the past we tipped $2 for every drink, $10-15 for steak house and $20-$25 at the chefs table depending on service.

What's everyone's thoughts?

The only correct answer to tipping is to tip whomever you want, however much you want, at any time you want.  What you tip or I tip is of no concern or relevance to anyone else.

NO! I do not “double tip” however if service exceeds expectations or I request something more than what would be considered a standard service then I do offer an extra tip. These questions asked on a forum are so misleading. I could say “Absolutely I give my room steward $100 upon boarding and debarking” but how honest is that and as often as I see it I don’t believe it. When we started prepaying tips I figured that the expectation would be to tip in addition to that. However if I’m asking for minimal service I am not tipping above the standard.

If you believe the internet 75% of the people are leaving as much in tips as their cruise fare is.  However, it is the internet, you can be whoever you want to be.

On the first day I tip the room steward and tell them to keep my wife happy.  I then find the Bar where I would do most of my ordering from and tip them quick several times. That usually sets me up for great service when ever I need it.

We have tipped the wait staff, but only when they go above and beyond their normal service.

No, I dont. I am friendly, not needy, and dont ask for extra. I pay the auto tip and that is it.

Exactly! 18 percent is a fair tip on drinks etc. I didn't see Carnival cut the tip rates when they halved our daily room service. Now the stewards have many more rooms but are servicing them once a day. In theory if Carnival is applying the tips the way they say they do the steward is now much better off having more rooms because each room generates more tips. I make it easy for my steward. Tell them don't waste any time with towel animals and usually just ask for fresh towels.
