pepelapew Posted February 26, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 26, 2006 We will be traveling with a person in our group that smokes and would like to know where on the ship are you allowed to do this? Also can you buy gold by the inch while on board? We did this while on RCCL's Empress of the Seas 2 yrs ago they had a display of chains etc that you purchased by the inch. I thought that was cool and bought a couple pieces. Thanks for the info. Debbie
Rare Lois R Posted February 26, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Hi, smoking is permitted port side on the ship. In the Casino and the lounges as well. Outside of course....port side. No smoking in the dining room or the theater. Gold by the inch. I think so....I was just on Zenith Feb 6th and had a great time. Have a wonderful cruise:)
teedee Posted February 26, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Yes to the gold by the inch - but only on certain days. There will be something in the dailies on the days it's available. I've bought several pieces through the years and have been very pleased with it. Terri
dkjretired Posted February 26, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 26, 2006 Also, they may smoke in their cabins as there are no non-smoking cabins on Celebrity.
Merrilymeggily Posted February 27, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 27, 2006 Your friend may find that even in areas where smoking is permitted, there are very very few ashtrays. I was with a group of people who smoked on Zenith in May and they were very considerate of the smoking regulations. We stayed well within the smoking areas when they were smoking. But especially out by the bar at the back of the ship, there was maybe one ashtray for every 3-4 tables. It was annoying for them, I'm sure. Believe me, I do it all the time. :D Also they never leave one in the stateroom, ask the steward and they will supply one also.
vjw1218 Posted February 28, 2006 #7 Share Posted February 28, 2006 The news that there is in-room smoking permitting is something I wasn't aware of when we booked this trip, our first on X. Several in my party are allergic to cigarette smoke, so it's a bit disconcerting. However, do the "smoking" staterooms smell bad? Can you tell when you walk in that someone has smoked in there - much like you can smell it in a hotel room? We didn't book a non-smoking room because we didn't know we needed to, so I want my family to be prepared. I assume it's fairly easy to avoid the smoking areas on the ship, but if the stateroom smells of stale smoke, it will make my father ill and I don't want him to be miserable. (Our other cruises were on HAL, so this was never an issue.) We said in a month, so we may not be able to change our room assignments at this point. Please advise. Jeano222 Posted February 28, 2006 #9 Share Posted February 28, 2006 It's my understanding there are no non-smoking ships on any line. Carnival did have a non-smoking ship Paradise but they couldn't fill cabins, so they now allow smoking.
njcruisingmom Posted March 1, 2006 #10 Share Posted March 1, 2006 We sailed on the Zenith last June and were also worried that there would be an odor of smoke -- but we were very pleasantly surpised that the cabin smelled fresh, with no evidence of cigarette smoke. Our only issue was that my husband and I wanted to sit in the Cova Cafe one night and have a drink, but since it is on the 'smoking' side of the ship we had to leave -- it was pretty smoky. Enjoy your trip
redheadskier Posted March 1, 2006 #11 Share Posted March 1, 2006 I hate smoking (it was great when they banned smoking in all public spaces, restaurants, bars in RI last year!)- that said - when you say there is smoking on the port side, and our room is on the port side, does that mean we are liable for more smell??
zaandam_2 Posted March 1, 2006 #12 Share Posted March 1, 2006 Oceania ships are almost totally non-smoking, including cabins.

HAL doesn't have any non-smoking rooms either. (from their website): Smoking For the comfort of all of our guests, designated smoking and nonsmoking areas are available in most lounges. Smoking is not permitted at any time in dining areas. Our ships do not have "nonsmoking" staterooms; however, all rooms are thoroughly cleaned after each cruise to assure the comfort of our guests. All showrooms are nonsmoking during performances.

They just book the rooms so have no way of knowing if anyone smoked. The only way you might get it in your room would be if you had a veranda or were near to an outside area frequented by a lot of people.
flashdog_1 Posted March 1, 2006 #15 Share Posted March 1, 2006 Just a suggestion to make life easier for your smoking friend. Have him book a cabin that is very near the aft public area on decks 8 and 9. Then if he wants a pre-breakfast cigarette, he can do so without annoying anyone else in his cabin (he might have to carry the ashtray from the cabin, though). There is a staircase back there that will lead him to the buffet area where he can eat and then smoke outdoors on the port side.

Also about the deck plan which shows no public rooms near cabins which you brought up. (We have sailed on the Zenith and Horizon 4 times and are booked on the Zenith this winter again.) I am also aware that smoke can go in any direction. I love watching it do that somtimes off the end of my cigarette. I have actually watched it go downward.
