mauimary Posted June 28, 2022 #1 Share Posted June 28, 2022 I’m reading rumors that the authorities in Barcelona are planning to move the cruise port further away from the city. I take it this has not happened yet. Anyone know when this is planned to happen. How far away. Heard that this is similar situation to the Venice cruise port situation. edinburgher Posted August 18, 2022 #4 Share Posted August 18, 2022 (edited) MSC, Costa and a few others also now call into Tarragona. But Barcelona isn't alone in looking to reduce cruise passenger numbers as some have reached "saturation point" which doesn't benefit either locals or cruise pax. There have been a few in recent years, and likely more to come, but so far, Santorini is one (restricted by the number of passengers not the number of ships) and staggering arrival and departure times. This most likely to do with the reduction of the sometimes enormously long lines for the chair lift. Dubrovnik now does the same based on number of passengers, Dublin another, Amsterdam imposed a daily tax on cruise pax, And some lines which previously used Livorno also now use La Spezia and Marina de Carrara. I expect there are already more and can probably expect to see more in the future should tourism numbers increase to pre Covid levels or rise even higher. JimmyTheSaint Posted August 19, 2022 #6 Share Posted August 19, 2022 The cruise port in Barcelona is huge and is of a huge financial benefit to the city, it isn't closing or moving. What is happening is that some of the smallest cruise ships have used the docking facilities at the Trade Centre in the port but the authorities are now closing these to cruise ships. They need the space for the ferries and other vessels.
