Most controversial cruise opinion??

We are a balcony family regardless of the destination.  We like having a place to retreat from the general public, without suffering from FOMO.

Love the Viking Voyages commercials - they are flipping genius.

I try to be aware of little pitchers with big ears in the vicinity before I start dropping f- bombs and other choice vocabulary words.

and finally, I do NOT have an informed opinion on The Godfather as I haven’t seen it.  DH and I do have a difference of opinion on whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

I definitely don't want to. I don't mind saying hi to a kid in the hallway, but that's about all I want to do. Don't tell me to travel on Virgin or Viking - I'm neither party hardy or high falutin enough for those options.

We've done two Viking river cruises and enjoyed them quite a bit.  We've never gone on their ocean cruises but have one booked for 2024.  We're doing it for the itinerary, which does the Norwegian fjords and goes up above the Arctic Circle.  NCL used to do this itinerary.  It was only when we decided we wanted to do it that they stopped.  😜

I guess we'll find out if it's too hoity toity for us.  The two river ones have not been.  Although on our last one, Nov 2021, there was one particular guest that if the rest of us could have gotten away with throwing overboard we probably would have.  She couldn't have a single conversation without somehow, someway bringing up that she was an engineer that graduated MIT.  She even tried telling the ship's engineer he was doing things wrong.

That could be your action item for your next transatlantic cruise.  Stateroom TV.

I know it’s iconic..(good or bad), put a lot of names on the map…I have tried, but not fully committed to it. DH has said he will watch it with me…we just have busy lives, and have a hard time finding time to watch anything…I’m back to being a football widow/fan again.  He is a HS football coach, so practice every night till late, then I go to the games on fridays.

but maybe next time we have a day to do nothing we will try again.  I enjoy mob movies, and he loves mob..anything.

I’ve never seen it either, but my lack of knowledge of Will Smith on another thread probably makes that no great surprise.

I have at least heard of it, which is something I suppose.

You would like it Keith, Will Smith plays Don Corleone.   😉

Interesting discussion.  There’s a TV series out called THE OFFER.  It documents how difficult it was to get The Godfather made.  Quite interesting.

Goodfellas is a Scorsese movie.  That makes it a classic in and of itself.  Plus, it starred that late, great Ray Liotta.

I don’t recall any Will Smith gangster movies.  Not saying he wasn’t in any.  I just don’t recall any.

Goodfellas?  Sopranos?

The aforementioned DH loves Goodfellas so I have seen it (well most of it), and Gangs of New York.  I saw the last episode only on sopranos…it was a thing if you recall, so went to a party…but didn’t have HBO at the time, so never saw anything else.  We have discussed watching it now though…but that would take time from The Godfather…you see our issue…we started boardwalk empire, but haven’t finished it…but come on, Steve buscemi. You know that has to be good…every documentary, of any type, we watch…we did watch The Irishman, that was good too

Goodfellas is (arguably) on the same level as Godfather as far as mob movies go.  They just don't make movies that good any more.  Don't get me started....  🤣

Amen!

Both won Oscars.  And, as good as both are, they’re still under rated.

Sopranos….lots of stars over the course of its run.  All were good.  The director decided to get all artsy-fartsy with the ending and resolved none of it.  So, bad on him.  That does not detract from the entirety of the series, which dealt with mental health, parent hood, parental influence, Brother/Sister dynamics, etc.

"it reminds me a lot of the haven discussion here. those that don't gamble insist that somebody must be losing THOUSANDS of dollars in order to get a "free" cruise, but that's not the way it works."

I am interested how that is not how it works, too?

The casino algorithm factors the time you spend playing and your average bet - easy on slot machines, but is a little trickier at the tables.  Sensors under the felt register whether you play every hand, and which bets were placed (i.e. did you play the bonus?).  The pit supervisors routinely make notes of average bets.

We are not high rollers - in fact, we play minimum bets - but we play Ultimate poker and craps for many, many, hours on each cruise.  In the long run, we are certainly down at least a few hundred bucks a cruise (sometimes a few thousand), so we figure we 'paid' for our free cabin at the casino.

What is entirely interesting is that my husband and I play basically the same strategy at cards, and have roughly the same $ on the table at craps (we play different numbers), but he is consistently in a higher casino tier than me.   So, when the offers come in, he gets a balcony and I get an interior.

Die Hard IS a Christmas movie and so is Love Actually.
- I keep checking this thread and all the gambling stuff has me checked out. Movie chat I can get down with! 🥳

Back to the actual topic of this thread …

I got bored with the Haven restaurant menu the one time we sailed in it. Why can’t they have a feature or a special whatever each night?

On a night when I didn’t want anything on their menu, and didn’t have a speciality reservation, I thought about going to one of the MDRs, but their menus weren’t posted in the app and I wasn’t trying to walk all the way down there to not want anything from there either.

(Not lazy, well, sorta, but we have mobility challenges.)

One thing we ask of our Butler is to provide us with a copy of each restaurant's "next day" menu each evening (or earlier if possible).

Then we can try to avoid last minute problems like that.

Another request for a Butler is to serve you in your suite from a Specialty restaurant.  So if there are no reservations, "no problem"!

Or in some cases, after a busy day ashore, we might be exhausted and just want to have something from a Specialty in the comfort of our pjs...

🙂

Same with me, we'll go there once for lunch and once for dinner max. Breakfast we're usually lazy and order the night before to be brought to our room. I've heard that you can eat food from anywhere in the ship in the Haven restaurant with even notice if you wan different food but Haven level service. We haven't bothered to try.

As Geezer mentioned above, ask nicely and your butler can bring you a copy of the MDR menu for that day. Or ask at the concierge desk - they usually have a copy there too.
