Royal Caribbean Hints At 7th Oasis-Class Cruise Ship

May 05, 2022

(1 p.m. EDT) -- Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has not ruled out the possibility of a 7th Oasis-class cruise ship, following the delivery of Utopia of the Seas in 2024.

Speaking at a trade and media event on the cruise line's newest -- and biggest -- ship, Wonder of the Seas, the incoming head of hotel operations Sean Treacy said: "Stay tuned."

When pressed, he added: "We are always evaluating. It's not a no, but it's not a yes."

Treacy was joined by outgoing head of hotel operations, Mark Tamis, as well as Vice President of Europe, Middle East and Africa Ben Bouldin.

"Right now, Oasis Class is the halo that we have, and they are all great," Bouldin said. "But then you bring out Icon of the Seas.

"When Icon gets launched people will say: 'Oh my god.' It will be like when you first saw an Oasis Class [ship]. It will be that different again."

Wonder of the Seas carries almost 7,000 passengers at full capacity and is the sixth in the line's hugely popular Oasis Class of ships -- each of which have at one time been the biggest in the world.

Wonder of the Seas launched in March to great acclaim, and it made its European debut yesterday in Barcelona.

It will operate in the Mediterranean throughout the summer, before returning to Fort Lauderdale, where it will be based permanently.

It has a number of new-to-the-line features including the Mason Jar restaurant, a new play area for families and new entertainment including a new ice show and a new show at the AquaTheater, with the line's first all-female divers.

Utopia of the Seas launches in March 2024 and will become the world's biggest cruise ship. It will also be the first ship in the class powered by Liquefied Natural Gas.

Let's see where things are heading. Icon Class kind of is the successor of the Oasis Class, hence either a additional Oasis Class or Icon class ship could get ordered.

With the Arrival of Icon I guess we will see at least two Oasis Class Ships leave the Caribbean market. Likely one Oasis Class Ship will be permanently based out of Brisbane and Wonder eventually to be moved to China, or at least Singapore.

Interestingly, it's not all about th biggest and largest ships, at the end the ports they can access is still limited. Hence, I am also expecting to see a announcement in the near future about a replacement of the Vision  and eventually Radiance Class. Supposedly there was a project called "Destination" Class in the making but put on hold once the pandemic hit looking at a class of ships slightly larger than Radiance Class today.

Looking at the Vision Class ships, they are really outdated and given their age always more costly to operate, so at least these need to go within next 3-5 years max.

Hopefully they will come up with a new design that will allow Royal to continue to sail into ports with bridge clearance restrictions (Baltimore, Tampa, etc.).

I can see an updated version of the Radiance class, but not of the Vision Class.

Yes...that would be great...love the Radiance class but it definitely needs to be updated/redesigned...hate the Centrum feature on this class and the cabin features are too dated. My biggest pet peeve is the poor/lack of lighting in the GS/OS bathroom and the location of the TV in the GS. We were just in both categories on Serenade and so disappointed.

I believe that at one point Oasis 7 will to become Icon 4 or 5 depending on the current orderbook.

Replacing the Radiance class? Yeah... With some new X ships!... RCI to the megaship mainstream market, X for the smaller ship, more "exotic" ports market.

Probably Icon #4. 7 Oasis-class ships seems overkill.

agree unless they move them around more.  FLA is going to have s lot of big girls going to boring ports. or ports most folks have been to multiple times.

I am glad I have Symphony booked for Western med next year.

Oasis Class was built to be the destination, perhaps a seven day with six sea days and a stop at coco cay will show up.

Only having megaships will also not the solution. To replace most of the Caribbean itinaries with Oasis / Icon class ships is ok. But you still need to offer "family" adventures where not only the ship is the destination and be able to continue to offer exotic itinararies. Finding a compromise with a size between Radiance and Voyager Class ships that will be able to reach pretty much all destinations could be an option where things might head. i could see them getting 5 ships of such class and the rest will be Quantum Class or larger in the longer term when also Voyager Class and Freedome Class will disapear as of 2030 - 2035 +-

The fact that some ports can't handle an Oasis or Icon-class ship is also troubling for RCCL in the future.

Yup agree but as some have said. RCI is competing with all inclusive resorts too.

there are folks that will switch back and forth between sightseeing trips and just resort like vacations.
