Is early September too early for fall leaves?

I booked a Canada/New England cruise on the Escape for next year on September 3rd.  Now I'm wondering if it will be way too early for leaves.

Around Columbus Weekend In October.

 

This this cruise we were on Sept 23rd to Oct 7, during the later the locals told us that it was late and they were starting to change.

We were just on an October 2-9 NE/Canada cruise and nothing had changed yet.

The first week of September is definitely too early, no matter the year.

 

This year, things seem a bit weird. Usually Columbus Day is a good time, but we are now a week later and starting to see change.
