Genoa

Like many ports it depends on where you want to go :).  There is a promenade that runs between the port and the excellent Aquarium, and that area is flat (along the water) and has a shopping area with a cafe/restaurant.  But once you move away from the port, the city is quite hilly and might challenge folks unless they are good walkers.  You can read about some of the city "highlights" online but we have found Genoa somewhat underwhelming with the exception of that waterfront area and Aquarium.  Many cruisers will use Genoa as a jumping off point to visit Portofino or Cinque Terre.

Genoa is an interesting historic city, among other sights full of palaces, some still occupied by the families, a couple of others to be visited. Of course, there are also the cathedrale, many churches, cafes, ice cream, just Italy.

Unless you are mobility restricted, all of this can be reached by walking. It begins right at the terminal.

We hired a local guide to go with us to portofino in the am and then provided a walking tour of genoa highlights in the afternoon.   It was a great day,  probably our favorite port of our med cruise.  Pleasantly surprised with Genoa.  Enjoy!

Due to a *****-up; our excursion to Portofino and Santa Margherita brought us back to Genoa port much earlier than expected. We wandered round the city for the afternoon. Easily doable.. but would suggest making a plan or otherwise you're letting yourself down. As we weren't expecting to be there, we had no plan. Still had a good time.. but had no idea what we were seeing.. what we were missing.. what we should be looking for etc.

Just a little note:  Stanley Tucci's Searching for Italy will be from Liguria Sunday night,  so there could be a little bit of Genoese sights and food for you to get familiar with.  On CNN - time is dependent on where you live.

Have any of you been to Boccadasse? For our stop in Genoa, we were looking for a place to go to just stroll, grab lunch, and relax. We also would like somewhere close to Genoa and easy to get to. (We’ve been to Genoa before.)

CCJack,

do you recall who you used in Genoa for your tour? That sounds perfect for our family!

thanks

gogenova tours   .    Sandra was a wonderful tour guide, we had our teenage kids along and she was great with keeping everyone interested.   We used public transportation but with a local along, it goes much faster and stress free.

Awesome. Thank you. I’ve been in touch with them. Going to ask about tailoring our tour this way. We too will have a 12 and 13 year old in tow and need to keep them interested and fed with local snack stops 🤣
