Does CuriseNext credit cover Tips or Internet package?

When you buy CN certificates they charge your account the full value, then credit back half, so if you bought 2 certificates they charge your onboard account $500...then they give your account a credit of $250 so you owe them $250. As @julig22 said, these certificates are then used as deposits on future cruises.

Are you asking if the OBC you receive from the purchase of CN certificates can be used to pay DSC?

which doesn't really make a whole lot of difference.  As noted by @CaptainBazz in the post before yours - the OBC received for buying the CND's effectively offsets half of the purchase price of the CND's.  That OBC is non-refundable (which, by the way, CAN'T be used for DSC) and is the only non-refundable OBC that CAN be used for CND purchase.

It's confusing for people that haven't made the purchase before, especially when it's advertised as 'OBC'...

Think of it this way.  I buy 2 CN. My onboard account is charged $500.

I spend $150 on ship in bingo, Starbucks, casino, extras in specialty dining.

Then i have $280 (new prices ) Daily Service Charge.

Assuming I don’t have Premium Plus drink package and no other on board credit, and I didn’t prepay DSC, my credit card would be charged $680 at the end of the cruise.

Math:   $500 (2xCN) minus $250 (CN credit) plus $150 (onboard spending) plus $280 (Daily Service Charge). = $680.

The Cruise Next credit just goes against my onboard account.

Well it is OBC, but these are non-refundable, so they can’t be used for DSC, unlike OBC you might get from a travel agent.  That is usually refundable.

many people do not realize there are two types and the difference between them.

Just like many people do not realize that you've already spent the so-called obc as an offset to the price of the CNs. There is no obc that needs to be spent.

Or to make it even more simple.

I buy 2 CN cert. My onboard account is charged $500.

I have prepaid the DSC, got any meals I want through Free at Sea and don’t do bingo, buy Starbucks etc.

The $250 credit is applied to my account and then at the end of the cruise my credit card is charged $250.

Math: $500 (2x CN) minus $250 CN credit = $250

It really is that simple. Anything else you purchase gets added to the $250, but there is no requirement to spend anything to benefit from the CN discount.

Yes, another correct example.  I made mine more complicated to demonstrate how it plays out if you actually do have onboard charges like many of us do.  Between your example and mine, the OP should have no other questions…😏

Thank you everyone , so  CruiseNext Credit simply is just credit in your account that can be applied to future trip .  say if I buy CN credit off others , the credit being transferred to my ncl account should be able to used to pay onbaord charge in August , right ?

NO!!!!!!!!

Cruise next can ONLY be used as a deposit toward cruise fare.

Read my response #2.

Most of the answers in this thread are assuming that you bought onboard - and even then the answer is NO.  You aren't getting any extra money to spend onboard.

What Julie said!

But if you received a CN certificate from someone else, whether it was transferred to you as a gift, or you bought. It from someone, it can be used as. $250 deposit on a new booking.  Nothing else. Zip, zero, zilch, nada - just a deposit.

we will take Getway for 10 days' European trip in August ,  just wonder if I can buy those cruiseNext credit to pay tips or internet package , maybe some specialty dinning ?

thank you,

Since tips are 100% optional (other than on FAS items) there are no tips to be covered by the FCC.

Yes, the CN guys don’t want you to understand this.  They want you to spend dollars on shopping, spa, dining, rather than taking the credit.   Now, if you were planning to buy that spa pass or specialty dining that’s fine.  It’s all money in vs money out.

On our Encore sailing in January, the Cruise Next Manager did a great job of explaining this.  He actually said forget the idea of OBC, just look at as half price for the Cruise Next certs.

I do wish NCL would stop with the intention obfuscation of the facts regarding the “OBC” with CN purchases.  It really reeks of snake oil.

I fail to see any obfuscation of any sort.  It is a really simple concept. You buy 2 CN at $250 each for a total of $500 and they apply a $250 OBC credit to your account.  At the end of the cruise all of the purchases you have made are added up and netted against all of the credits you have to get to your final bill amount.  Nothing hard about it at all.

@MoCruiseFan you're right, it's not hard.  The 'confusion' some people see is that they're forgetting (or maybe not realizing?) that the CND purchase is being billed to your on-board account, resulting in the $250 OBC offsetting half of the purchase price once it's been credited.  As a result, they think that OBC then has to be "used" to pay for something and try to figure out what, exactly, it can be used for.

We were very fortunate the first time we purchased cruise next we had a good CN director who explained how the credit worked. On subsequent cruises we had the CN rep who insisted it was a non-refundable credit that had to be used onboard. Fortunately we knew better.  I suspect there is pressure, and perhaps incentives for the CN rep to increase OB revenue…esp. these days.

Incorrect.

The OP is asking about using their Cruise Next OBC to cover their Daily Service Charges. So, yes, there is a gratuity that could be covered and so could the internet package. The correct answer is that the cruise next OBC actually offsets the cost of the certificates, so there is no OBC left to apply to anything.

Where I see the obfuscation is in the approach of the CN reps on some ships.  Last cruise the CN guy was telling the guy ahead of me in line that he would pay for his spa treatment.   Well, if the man had planned that as part of his vacation, I guess that’s true, but it is very misleading.    You can tell from the questions on this board that people often times feel as though they’ve been mislead (or worse).   I think if they want to sell future cruise certificates at 50% off they should just say so and charge you half rather than muddying the water.   As I remember when the Future Cruise Certificates first came into being, that is how it worked.

Agreed it reeks of snake oil.  I've said it elsewhere, it's so unnecessary.  These things should sell themselves.

I assume same CN Manager as we had in November.  I agree he was good and I heard him say exactly what you say above.  Problem wasn't him, it was his staff.  See below.

Just because it's clear in your mind doesn't mean NCL doesn't obfuscate it.  For example, right on the front page of the Cruise Next brochure they hand out, in big bold letters: "Receive up to $1000 today!".  As you know, to get that $1000, you have to give them $2000.  That's obfuscation.

And then there is the flat out lies.  I tried to hand in my form to purchase 2 CNs and the snake oil sales droid responded that I could get two more for free.  I cut the droid off before I could hear how that was going to be explained, but, I have no doubt there would be a lot of obfuscation to hide the lies.
