Crusin-Suzan Posted February 20, 2023 #1 Share Posted February 20, 2023 Has anyone tried this? It looks so interesting! Do we get the 4* discount?
Rare Crazy For Cats Posted February 20, 2023 #2 Share Posted February 20, 2023 We did this once when it was offered. IMHO very much worth the surcharge. I keep hoping to have it offered again while we are onboard. I don’t remember if we got a discount, it was pre shutdown.
OlsSalt Posted February 20, 2023 #3 Share Posted February 20, 2023 Always enjoyed their Indonesian offerings in the past - nice change of pace. The items are somewhat tamed down and not really "authentic" but a very nice array of new flavors and combinations, depending up on how elaborate they want to make it. Certainly miss the former Indonesia Afternoon Tea (along with the special Royal Dutch Tea)
freestyling Posted February 20, 2023 #4 Share Posted February 20, 2023 Was and will be an absolute YA if offered on our next cruise. Not as spicy as I like but very good. No discount on “special” dinner events
Seasick Sailor Posted February 20, 2023 #5 Share Posted February 20, 2023 Half price for us (4 star) currently on Koningsdam. Worth it.
sciencewonk Posted February 21, 2023 #6 Share Posted February 21, 2023 We had a Tamarind Indonesian pop-up lunch on Noordam's 34 day transpacific cruise. It was the best meal of the cruise.
Rare Gail & Marty sailing away Posted February 21, 2023 #7 Share Posted February 21, 2023 We loved it.
Rare VMax1700 Posted February 21, 2023 #8 Share Posted February 21, 2023 I am going to be the exception here as I did not enjoy the Indonesian Rijsttafel on Koningsdam. We love Tamarind, but found that the Indonesian meal lacked flavour. It was medium hot and spicy but the flavours did not come through, only the heat. Infi Posted February 21, 2023 #9 Share Posted February 21, 2023 What cruises usually have this offering? From the above descriptions, it seems like it's the longer cruises, but wondering if there's any threshold (i.e. 14 days or more).
rotjeknor Posted February 21, 2023 #10 Share Posted February 21, 2023 We had the Rijsttafel on the anniversary TA last October on the Rotterdam, very good! And if it’s not spicy enough, just add some sambal.

(Darned if I remember which was which now- I need to keep studying too, since I really liked the sweeter one - they offer both) Asked our waiter once which one he liked best. His answer- the one his mother makes, fresh every day.

Glad I'm not the only one except for mine was on the nieuw statendam. I think the regular menu is better.
Rare albingirl Posted February 21, 2023 #13 Share Posted February 21, 2023 Personally, I found it very salty. I drank gallons of water after that.

We keep three at home , Oelek, Badjak and Surinaamse. The last one is made from Madame Jeanet peppers (125000-325000 on the Scoville scale) so pretty hot ! Sambal Oelek is about 2000 on this scale. 1

Yikes! Sambal Oelek is as far as I can go. But it does add a very warming depth.

A little background about Sambal badjak - the sweeter, less hot one - the one that is really "not bad" at all on my scale: https://www.cookmeindonesian.com/sambal-bajak-ploughmans-sambal/
