If there is a tour to Rostock it is a fascinating city. The beach at Warnemunde is an interesting experience….lots of people, shops, ice cream, etc.

We preferred to go to Rostock. Bij train (short walk to the railway station in Warnemünde) or by riverboat (next to cruise terminal). Rostock is worthwhile.

I lived in Rostock for a year and last visited in 2019.  I would take the train from Warnemuende to Rostock (20 mins)  Head to the tourist info on Universitaetsplatz  ( basically the focal point of the town) and pick up a leaflet about the city walls. You can walk around the walls and there’s info about all the major structures/churches/gates. Stein toe is my personal favourite. In the Petrikirche there’s an astronomical clock and you can climb the tower in Nikolaikirche. If you like architecture, it’s interesting looking at the different styles of the buildings : gothic, hansestic, socialist. This would fill the morning.

Then return to Warnemuende in the afternoon and soak up the atmosphere, have a beer, eat some pickled herring etc. You can also do a cruise and learn about the shipyards if that’s your thing.  I love Warnemuende but admittedly have never been there when a cruise ship is in town.

Alternatives: trip on the Molli steam train or trip to Schwerin, there’s a nice palace there. There is also some really pretty countryside/coast at Ahrenshoop and Darss peninsula ( think wild, white beaches and thatched cottages) but that would require hiring a car.

We were in Warnemunde last summer as a cruise stop . We did not want to take the trip to Berlin. We took the train, which is right next to the cruise terminal, into Rostock. Very nice little city. Spent time walking around, seeing the sights. Then we came back to Warnemunde and spent the rest of the day there. We really enjoyed Warnemunde. Walked around by the fishing boats, had a snack and drink at one of the outdoor restaurants. Walked down by the lovely beach, and climbed up the lighthouse. We really enjoyed our day there.

Warnemunde is actually a pretty seaside resort to explore and is a suburb of Rostock.

For a really easy and interesting day, combine Warnemunde with Rostock.  Very very easy to DIY both as the cruise berths are a 2 minute walk from the train station, and to get into Warnemunde itself, you pass through the train station and you are there. We went into Rostock in the morning, had a quick late lunch onboard then explored Warnemunde in the afternoon.  All very easy as warnemunde into  Rostock is no more than a half hour journey, possibly a little less, although once there you might want to take a tram from the station to the historic centre to save a long walk. There will be much online info about Rostock if you search.

There have been a good number of previous threads about Warnemunde and possible sightseeing options, very easy to find if you use the SEARCH box under your user name.  You can read all the results at your leisure. Note that before using this option, you should not be on any individual thread, stay on the main N. Europe and Baltic Board.

So easy to use and I had a quick look and found 50 plus threads, this being a typical one which you should find helpful

This is one of the rare ports that I booked an excursion via the cruiseline - to Schwerin. My family discussed Rostock vs. Schwerin, and the Schwerin castle won. There wasn't a time/distance advantage to taking trains and going independently, so we went for ease with the NCL excursion. We will have enough time to tour Warnemunde on our own afterward, and I guess if we are feeling very energetic, could still take the train to Rostock. (I highly doubt we are that energetic at our 9th port in as many days though!)

Warnemuende is really busy in the summer months and we prefer to stay in Rostock. Our go to in the area is the Rostock Apartment Living Hotel. It’s clean, modern and has a fantastic location in the old town but a 2 minute walk from the Town Hall and a tram stop. It would be super easy to get to the cruise port from there - 5 min tram to the Hauptbahnhof and then 20 min train to Warnemuende.
