How Does this Work?

We have booked a Westbound TA embarking from Southampton on Sunday, April 27, 2025.  We noticed that the QM2 is completing a 14 day Mediterranean Cruise and disembarking on Sunday, April 27th in Southhampton.

 

How does it work to have disembarking and embarking on same day?  Does it delay boarding?

People disembark from early morning through to towards the end of the morning, and embarking passengers go aboard from lunchtime onwards - in the meantime the cabin stewards do their best to get the rooms cleaned after people have left them so they are ready for the new occupants.

Occasionally, if the ship is late arriving because of the weather or something, they have to delay embarkation a little, but this is pretty rare.

Virtually every cruise line, every cruise, plans to disembark and then embark on the same day, no problem.

On the other hand, nowadays, they don’t like to move around too energetically, because of fuel costs.

Enter “cruise ship turnaround day” on your favorite Internet search engine and you will find several videos that give an impression of the controlled chaos this entails. I recall there was an hour-long documentary about 15 years ago called “Extreme Cruise Ship” that showed turnaround day on an RCL Oasis class ship. Pretty interesting to watch, definitely would prefer not to be doing it myself.
