Flying In and Out of Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

For my SS cruse this summer, i will be flying from US to Bergen , Norway.  The flight routing is US to Frankfurt (Terminal 1), Frankfurt to Bergen (Terminal 1).  Both flights are on Lufthansa..

Questions:

Do I have to go through Passport Control in Frankfurt?

Will my luggage be checked through to Bergen or will I have to go through customs in Frankfurt?  If I have to go through customs in Frankfurt, is there a location in customs where airport personnel transfer the luggage to the Bergen flight?

Because Norway is part of the Schengen zone, you do have to go through passport control in Frankfurt, your first port of entry into the zone. Very likely, your bags will be checked through and you won't see them until Bergen. My understanding of the customs process is that you go through customs in Bergen, which probably means walking straight out of the green (nothing to declare) line.

If you’re changing airlines, allow yourself plenty of connection time. We changed from United to Lufthansa to go to Copenhagen with a 3-hr connection. We didn’t see our bags for 2 days.  Thankfully, we had planned to spend 3 days prior to departure. Probably not as much of an issue if on same airline.

Yes, you go through Passport AND Security control in Frankfurt (and there will be no passport check upon arrival in Bergen).

 

Yes, your luggage will be checked through to Bergen and go through customs there. You can use the Green channels if you have nothing to declare. Customs officials will,   however, know from your luggage tags that you come from outside the EU.

 

The only watch out is the transfer in Frankfurt. Lufthansa does allow a minimum 50 min connection time and you arrive and depart in Terminal one. However, you do have to pass not only through immigration, usually not a big issue, but through security, where lines  can be quite long.

In addition, your flight to Bergen most likely will depart from an A gate in Terminal 1, but your USA flight will arrive at a Z or B gate in Terminal 1. 

Going from Z to A is relatively easy: you go through (potentially long security lines) and then two floors down to immigration and you are right in the middle of the A gates.

B to A is more of a hassle as you pass through immigration first, but then can end up in the main concourse for the security lines if you take a wrong turn. 

Net, you may want to allow for 90min transfer time in Frankfurt to avoid any transfer Thank you MJN1.  I have a 2 hour window if my flight from US is on time, so it sounds like I should not have any problem  barring unforeseen circumstances.

When traveling through an airport we haven't been through before, I have found it useful to go online and find a map of the airport, and get a sense of where you will be arriving and departing.  It can save a lot of time.  My wife and I once got in a LONG line (I think at Heathrow), thinking we had to do that, but I had her stay in line and I checked it out - it turned out we didn't need to be in that line - saving us much time.  Knowing the general lay of the land can make the connection easier.  I would print out a copy of the plan, then discard (oops, RECYCLE!!) when done with the connection.  Hope this helps. 

 

PS  I actually found a short cut at SFO to get to international gates that saved lots of hassle (leaving and reentering secure area), just by looking at the map of the airport.
