General info for Reykjavik as starting port

Recommended Posts

Looking to book a cruise (1 way) in next few days. Cruise will leave on a Thursday.

Flying in from USA.

How far (and long) to get from airport to cruise terminal?

Recommended minimum time between landing and cruise loading at 2 pm.

Hotel availability at any location (port, city, airport). Looking at arriving maybe 1 or 2 days beforehand.

Is Uber available?

Thanks in advance.

When we went on our Iceland cruise in 2021, we arrived on the day before embarking and stayed at the Skuggi Hotel by Keahotels. It was very convenient for walking into the "Centre" downtown area, and to Hallgrimskirkja. Also just around the corner from the Green Route minibus stop. Try the wonderful pastries at Braud & Co near the church.

We flew Icelandair IAD-KEF which arrived at approximately 6:30 am. Going through Immigration and retrieving our luggage took probably an hour. The airport bus is at the north end of the terminal and will wait until it is full before leaving. That ride is about 45 minutes and will only go as far as the Reyjkavik bus terminal. You need to change to minibuses there to travel to the Centre  area. Not sure if Uber is available but cabs are plentiful and quick for getting to the pier where cruise ships dock.

The Flybus into town is convenient, and as noted, requires a transfer to another smaller bus, which will then drop you off at a bus stop.  You may still need to walk a bit to your hotel.  Or, take a taxi from the bus station.  If there is more than two of you, a taxi from the airport may be just as economical.

Any hotel in the 101 postal code is convenient to downtown.

Iceland is amazing.  Go a couple days early and explore areas you won't be stopping in.  The south coast is gorgeous and probably not on your port call.  I like to go at least a day early for tours/cruises anyways just to be safe.

I'm fairly certain there is no Uber.

Thanks everyone.

For a 9 day cruise, then maybe 2 extra days in London, and an extra day in Iceland, we will have our share of luggage.  Bus sounds good, but we might taxi as well.

Again this is a quick look, the window on the special we are looking at closes soon.

Thanks for the Iceland Air tip.  It wasn't showing on any flights available, but I will double check.
