River Cruise Insurance Related Question

I've been on more than 100 ocean cruise, never a River Boat cruise.  Also, I don't usually pay much for an ocean cruise because the casino comps it.  This summer I'm going on a River Cruise leaving out of Budapest with a friend.  We decided to share a cabin because the costs for solos is much more than we want to pay.  We haven't made final payment yet (but will soon).  Her mother is ill (terminal but sometimes she gets much better and other times is much worse).  She has "cancel for any reason" insurance where I have an annual plan.  If we make final payment and then her mother is too ill for my friend to be away for two weeks and she cancels.  Would I have to pay an additional fare to be able to go or since the insurance is paying for her (if she can't go), then there wouldn't be any additional charges for me?  Has anyone experienced this?

You should each ask this exact question of your own travel insurer.  Chances are there will be differences in the policies (!), but that may be only in the procedure to make the claim.  Best to find out in advance, though, including how to make the claim should it happen.  That can make a difference.  And good luck... hope you both go and there are no untoward events!
