Kushiro, Japan Anyone?

Port call in Kushiro, Japan in October (Holland America Line Westerdam).

 

Any intel on independent tours or DIY for the day?

Just a warning that we are on the Westy now, and all the HAL Excursions for Kushiro are sold out.  This has been a recurring problem at nearly all the ports.  We will know more after our April 26 visit.

Looks like the HAL excursions go to the national park and the stop is all about nature and the fish market?   Enjoy the cruise and I look forward to any intel on Kushiro.

We were told today, that our April 26 visit to Kushiro has been cancelled due to forecasted high winds/seas.

So far, I'm getting no intel on Kushiro.....

 

Anyone familiar with an independent tour or has anyone gone "on their own/DIY in Kushiro, Japan?  We will be there in October.

My friends and I will be there in about four weeks and I will try to remember to post something here afterwards.  Oceania is only offering costly tours to the crane reserve and wetlands and we have no interest in those. We have a long day there so hopefully we will find something of interest.

Holland America Line has similar tours.....so looking for something else.

Kushiro is a really small, very rustic, Northern Japan town.

There really isn’t much there except Nature.

The Sea Coast is beautiful, the local seafood is wonderful - but expensive.

The Cranes are spectacular.

The wetlands are beautiful.

That’s about it.

If you are not interested in the Nature part of this port, you are out of luck.

On the pier, right near your ship, you will find a local products shopping building that offers just about every type of Hokkaido food that exists. A nice place for some souvenir shopping and getting a bite of the local food.

We were there several years back (2015) on a Princess cruise. Quite a charming city. Here is my blog post for that day.

We visited Kushiro a few years ago and took a taxi to the Kushiro City Museum.  I thought that it was very interesting with info on the Ainu culture, a complete whale skeleton and some recreations of the marshland in the area with local wildlife such as the famous cranes.  Would have visited it again in April, but the Westerdam had to miss the port due to the weather.

I have read about a shuttle bus, but I thought that the ship docks in the center of the town near Fisherman’s Wharf.  (HOLLAND AMERICA)

Can anyone give me information on the shuttle bus?  Thanks.

We were on the Westerdam for a port call at Kushiro in early October.

 

Holland America offered a free r/t shuttle from the port to the Moo (fish market, market, center of Kushiro).

The ride was probably like 20 minutes or less.
