Portofino

I think ships usually moor and then you will tender to a small dock in Portofino. Your itinerary should show whether you dock or tender. There are quite a few restaurants in Portofino but I haven't eaten in any of them so sorry I can't give a recommendation.

Cruise ships tender in Pirtofino. It is a tiny port.

You will be hard pressed to find a reasonably priced restaurant in Portofino. Just walk up the street and check out the menus which are always posted outside. Stop at one that fits your budget.  The farther away from the water, the less expensive they may be.

Our Celebrity ship tendered right into Portofino. After touring Portofino and Santa Maria Liguria I returned to Portofino and walked around the row of restaurants that rim the lovely port, choosing one that appealed to me. Are they cheap?  No.  Is the food great?  No, although the fish is fresh.  Was it worth it for the view and the ambience?  Yes, worth every euro cent!!

positano is teeny tiny and you may only need a max of two hours to fully explore it (perhaps less)  Depending on how long you will have in Positano, you could travel over to Santa Margherita (Ligure)and explore there too.  It is a lovely seaside resort town with quite a few sights and a pleasant location to while away a few hours.  Info and images online (tripadvisor and others) It also has many restaurants and prices are likely to be lower and offer more choices  than those in Portofino (which attracts the wealthy and has prices to match)

You can walk the shortish distance to SML or take a taxi, but the most scenic way to transfer between the two is to take one of the ferries the short 15/20 minute crossing.

There have been quite a number of previous threads about both Portofino and SMl which you could read for more information. If you do not know how to use the SEARCH tool, go to the  general  ITALY BOARDS FORUM ( not an individual thread) , input the word Positano into the empty search box under your user name, hit the little spy glass next to it and all threads containing that word will appear in the results ready for you to read.  You could try he same process using Santa Margherita but many of the threads relating to one also link the other as they are so close to each other.

marazul helpfully posted a link to the ferry schedule only a few days ago on this thread

But do also read other past threads from your search results for more info on both..

we're embarking MSC poesia on Nov 19 at Portofino and there seems to be very little info on how this actually works. Is there a embarkation port at portofino, where exactly is it? How does one get there from Pisa?

Portofino or Portovenere?

You are embarking at Genoa, not Portofino.

Thanks... but are you sure, why would it bracket Portofino then?

Portofino is what they consider the "attraction" of a stop in Genoa. This is a common practice for cruise lines. For example, Livorno (Florence) or Messina (Taormina).

Portofino is a tiny tender port away from Genoa. No way this could be an embarkation port.

Our ship is stopping in Genoa and our plan is to take the train on our own into Santa Margherita and then the bus into Portofino.

if you can work the timings, do consider taking the short ferry ride between Santa Margherita and Portofino at least one of the directions.  It is only 15 or 20 mins and really pretty and scenic.

Timetables can be found online.

The small ferries leave from a very central point on the waterfront in front of a garden area.
