It can be done on the underground (Metro) but it can be tricky with luggage & being a Newbie.

I would take the Heathrow Express, it quick easy and direct, it's about £25 where the underground is about £13 but it's well worth the extra money.

Heathrow Express is currently only £16.50 pp for an "early bird" ticket for that date. The only restriction for that discounted fare ifs that it's only good for the date that you choose, whereas the standard £25 ticket is flexible for any date.

But early-bird ticket prices are dynamic - had you booked a few months ago it would have cost just £5.50 as per thejuggler's post, if you book it just a month or two out it'll likely be about £20, if you book just a few weeks out you're likely to find no early-bird fare available.

So book soonest.

For three adults a private transfer will cost very little more, but if your lodgings are close to Paddington station the Heathrow Express is simpler, no worry that your flight will be late or that your transfer driver won't turn up.

If your lodgings require onward transportation from Paddington, a private transfer is more likely the way togo

Just MHO as always

The Elizabeth Line is simple to  use and an economical choice.  There are agents at the ticket kiosk.  I dont think it any more complicated than HE.  I agree, however, if the hotel is not within simple walk of Paddington a private transfer from Heathrow is likely the way to go.  Otherwise the Taxi ranks at Paddington are easy to find they will still need to grab a car.

If the group is new to using subways, the agents at Heathrow are the ones to learn it from rather than the neighborhood station which will be busier

There are a lot of videos on line that show how to get around the system, tap and go , using gate, wayfinding

Yes hotel is very close to Paddington.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Looks like there aren't any transfers with the Elizabeth Line correct and cost 12.80?  Heathrow Express now would be direct and 16.50 if booked soon.  Which of these would be easier?  I'm guessing Heathrow express is faster?

They are both easy.  If you have a chip and pin credit card, you just tap it on the pad at the gate for the Elizabeth.   You can pre book HE or get tickets at the desk.

Elizabeth runs every 10 minutes from terminal 2/3 takes 30 minutes to Paddington, no changes.  There are also trains from 4 and 5 on less frequent interval per hour

HE every 15 minutes and takes 15 minutes

The Heathrow airport web site has links to information snd tickets booking for HE
