Haven Questions

Hello Everyone,

I booked my first cruise out of the Haven for March of this year. It is a 10 day carribean cruise. I have several questions so bear with me. I have looked online/ talked to ncl staff but haven’t found satisfactory answers.

1. what is the etiquette standards as far as dress and child expectations ? Are people expected to dress nicer in the haven restaurant than they would be in a regular MDR? My daughter is 3 years old and has trouble sitting down in the MDR. Is the haven restaurant child friendly ?

2. Besides the obvious benefits of the haven (better room, food , getting on  and off ship) can  anyone let me know what are lesser known benefits that I should be aware of ?

3 how can I best utilize my concierge/butler? From my understanding the concierge just makes your reservations, which I can do easily on the app so I don’t see much value. As far as the butler I know they can bring food/drink to your room but know little else what I can utilize them for.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to cruise critic.  Quick replies:

Haven restaurant dress expectations

There is no formal dress requirement, but some folks will indeed get get "dressed-up", but they will dine alongside people in t-shirts and flip-flops.  No one will care.

Haven child behavior expectations

Having experienced dining in both the Haven and in the MDR -- and living a life on land -- I think your fellow diners won't appreciate a child that strays from the orbit of his/her table, makes excessive noise, and/or makes a mess.  (Not saying your kid would).  Anyway, no: the Haven is no more child-friendly than the MDR.  In fact, it's a smaller venue, so any disruptions will be more apparent to the entire room.

Haven benefits

Yes, read @Sthrngary tome on the Haven.  It's a long read with a lot of detail, but it will let you eek out the most from your trip.

Butler use

I'm from the camp that I could've had an equally wonderful experience without a butler, but, that said, if you had something in mind, explore the Haven write-up Gary put together.  They're not drawing a bath or putting away your clothes, but do stock your room with food and drink if you like as well as perhaps set up dining in your room, if you want to order room service from one of the dining venues.

@Cruiseguy14 As previously stated. Welcome to CruiseCritic.com. Each and every question you asked is answered in the tagged posting above that I wrote.  The best approach is to read the very first posting on page one.  It is updated as of 2022.

When done reading, you can ask me any questions you like by posting @Sthrngary make sure it is highlighted and it will alert me you want me to answer a question for you.  You can also Click the "Quote" and I will see the alert.

Two of your questions are somewhat a can of worms.  Children's behavior and Dress Code.  It creates and has created many debates.  Here is a general rule.  NCL is a family oriented cruise line.  Unlike others that are Adult Only.  That creates a certain level of expectations on both your questions. My OP-ED's are always focusing on enhancing your cruise experience and always having "Realistic Expectations".  With that in mind, all the Guest in the Haven pay a premium for this level of experience on a Mainstream Cruise Brand.  A very few guest can come across as entitled due to that premium paid.  Other can come across as defiant.  Just normal for me on Social Media.

My advice to you is always be considerate of others and use common business sense as we all do.  As long as another guest does not negatively effect my vacation, flexibility is always the norm. I hope that makes sense.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

Being a newbie myself the “secrets” thread probably provided the most information found on the web.  The great thing in the haven is all meals can be served in your room!  We certainly are going to be taking advantage of that on our trip in a few weeks!

1. The Haven does not have any higher/different standard than anywhere else on the ship. Children should try to behave themselves and not impose themselves on other passengers (e.g., Don't take over the hot tub with a fleet of floating toys and don't be banging their plates with the silverware). Yeah, probably not good to be constantly running around any restaurant, but the Haven is kid friendly. If there is something off the kids menu or main menu that you DD would like to eat at every meal, let the Maitre D know so that the galley has it on hand.

Dress code in the Haven is casual. There is no "debate", that is the dress code. Shorts are allowed for all meals in the Haven restaurant and we do that from time to time.

2. Read Sthrngary's post.

For us, on busy port days, we like to have breakfast served in our room. There will be the regular breakfast cards in your stateroom with check boxes. IGNORE THE CHECKBOXES and write down what you want on the card, one card per person, and get it to your butler the night before. Eggs over easy, scrambled eggs, egg whites, omelet with your choice of fillings, breakfast potatoes, hash browns, NY Strip steak, bacon, ham, sausage, mushrooms, grilled tomato, fresh fruits, fresh breads, anything you want from the Haven breakfast menu (available on your NCL app). Don't miss out on the lovely cold buffet in the Haven restaurant either - and you can ask for items from the cold buffet to be delivered.

image.png.bc15ae1d6b2ebb5a1841e1eb85f2073d.png

Each afternoon, your butler will deliver the snack of the day. Ask for extra snacks, or specific snacks if you want. We always ask for full bowls of M&Ms (peanut or plain), Gummy Bears, and Bar Mix (which goes into zip lock bags for snacks). We also ask for pitchers of water and ice tea in our fridge. And, even for us big kids, we request a PB&J sandwich from time to time. Whatever your daughter would like.

Your concierge is able to oversell a restaurant. If your app says that you can't get Cagney's at 7:30 on Monday, ask your concierge on embarkation day and they are likely going to be able to over sell the restaurant for you. Once a restaurant is totally oversold, even the concierge can't get you a seat,,, but normally they will seat you whenever you want.

Your concierge will also escort you to shows. While there is a long line to get into the theater or comedy club or other show venue, your concierge will sneak you in the "back door" and allow you to sit in suites seating or any seat in the house (which for us is normally [near] front and center).

Both your butler and concierge are there to ensure that you have everything you need to have a wonderful cruise.

I did a posting last year on Haven foods. The menu has not changed much, but give it a peak for ideas. You will see that we added a lobster tail or two to every dinner entrée.

The other thing the Concierge can do for you is to fix billing errors on your onboard account.  No need to wait in the long guest services line.  They also got us new key cards when ours stopped working.

Enjoy!

My experience on cruise critic has shown me this statement to be patently false. 🙂

@Grimix My comment is NOT directly about your response.  It is about the subject of "Dress Code in the Haven Restaurant".  Your above comment was responding back to a poster that said, wearing shorts and flip flops.  They said "No one will care".  You said, that comment was patently false.  Here is the Debate I really did not want to have however once again, I will address it and it will become an issue again.

The dress code officially is Casual.  At dinner anywhere on an NCL ship Haven or other wise is NEVER formal. The MOST casual is usually Breakfast and Lunch.  Regardless of the policy, based on many Haven cruises, dinner is country club casual.  I have personally seen folks come to dinner in bathing suits, dirty tea shirts and flip flops.  This restaurant is one of the nicest on the ship.  Everyone should ask themselves, does a bathing suit seem appropriate for dinner.  Now nice shorts, with a nice shirt seems to me to casual but still is under the concept of Country Club Casual.

Nobody has the right to be upset if someone comes to dinner with nice shorts on.  They paid the premium so they can do that.  No Haven server or crew member is going to say anything because regardless of how they feel, one negative survey about them could lose their Haven Position.

Would I go with shorts, flip flops to the Haven Restaurant for dinner, "NO".  Not my style.  Would I be upset and would it effect my meal if some else did, "NO".  They paid the premium.  Have I seen some Haven guest get rude to other guest, "YES".  Do they have the right based on NCL Haven Policy, "NO".

That is the debate I referred to earlier.  A similar debate happens on unruly children in the Haven Hot Tub, Courtyard Pool and Haven restaurant.  Those children are not the issue it is their parents that allow them to disturb other.  I did this to honor the OP's questions.  Can we now talk about how great the Haven and its amenities are for all now.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

I was just being snarky about expecting no one to care when we've seen that on cruise-critic there is always someone who will, but I do agree with what you wrote! We shouldn't let what other people are wearing affect our vacations. If the only way you'll (royal you) be happy is if everyone is dressed to the nines then this isn't the line for you. If it makes you happy to dress up in a tux, go for it! Would I mind someone wearing a bathing suit to dinner? I'd probably think it's weird, but it's not going to ruin my vacation!

I was going to comment but I see you've addressed the "no one will care".

As I like to say to some: "Don't crawl under the tables if you don't want to see men's legs."

BTW, on our last cruise I did see a couple in the Haven bar wearing bathrobes.  It appeared they were only passing through.

Honestly, I think I am in a (happy) daze when I am on a cruise. I never even notice what someone is wearing when I am having a meal...unless it is absolutely gorgeous or nasty-body-parts revealing. 🙂 There's a whole lotta leeway between those two. You will be fine.

I found the concierge in my first haven experience to be more helpful than I thought.  Helped us book restaurants, helped with internet issues resulting in us no being able to log off and use up minutes etc.

On a later cruise haven concierge desk wasn't much help(to my surprise given my first experience).  So my experience is it depends on the people staffing the haven concierge.

The policy allows for shorts to be worn in the Haven restaurant. Full stop. What other people think is irrelevant. Have we ever worn shorts to dinner, sure. Do we normally wear shorts to dinner, no. Usually in a sundress. And dockers an a polo shirt. Never anything more formal than that.  On our last cruise, the Maitre D sat us every night, often over riding the hostess table assignment and clearing a table at the window for us (he received a great tip on the last night).

Oh I love dress code questions! Hehehe....but I'll spare ya. For now. I might get there though. It's truly a fun topic for me (I have an oddly wide smile just thinking about it and I'm at work)! My coworkers, if they walk past my office, will probably think I've gone crazy. I don't smile at work. It's work. Why would you be happy?

Anywaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!

Benefits of the Haven.

- Everything. You are going to have a fabulous time! Absolutely phenomenal! We've only cruised four times as a couple and each time has been Haven. I don't say "never" often, but I'm almost about to say never on any other class of room.

- I don't know what ship you're on...if it has a Shanghai Noodle Bar, an included restaurant, be sure to ask your butler to bring food from there so you don't have to wait in the ginormous line. Dumplings, spring rolls, broth-based soups, and fried rice...mmmm, so good! Here's our pile of dim sum dishes when we actually ventured to the restaurant and waited in line (we smartened up next time):image.thumb.jpeg.bc2194545a34c3a9034bea9a3dbab5a4.jpeg

- Would you like crab cake instead of Canadian bacon on your Eggs Benedict? Let the host or maitre d know a day before. Prefer a filet to the NY Strip for steak and eggs? Let the host or maitre d know a day before. It's ok to customize. Get what you want, within reason and with enough notice. Here's a protein plate my husband ordered, followed by my crab cake Eggs Benedict:

image.thumb.jpeg.ac08323370aea31f774e59113860f34a.jpeg

image.thumb.jpeg.f70090247f93b66feaed6145b0e5cee7.jpeg

- Want more than the prescribed (and pathetic) three shrimp cocktail? Order 13, like my husband does. Order four or five pieces of pork belly. It's freaking good! They only give you two pieces.

image.thumb.jpeg.d934ffb497aec0b994605440ebd7ce56.jpeg

- If you have issues with your invoice, talk to the concierge. Don't bother with guest services. You'll wait behind no one, or maybe one or two people, to discuss your billing concerns. Want to cancel a shore excursion? Add a shore excursion? Secure a reservation to a restaurant or show? That's the concierge, too!

- Normally, the bartenders will concoct any beautiful drink you would like. With alcohol or sans alcohol. Upcharges apply.

- Others will say don't go to American Diner on embarkation day (if offered on the ship you're one). I say go. Shrimp and grits. Mozzarella sticks. Lobster/shrimp rolls. All in a very casual atmosphere which I prefer to the more elegant Haven dining room. American Diner isn't phenomenal. Service won't be epic. But, the food is mostly good and the milkshakes (upcharge) are really lovely! Mmmm, mmmm, mmmm! Can you tell I'm fat yet?

image.thumb.jpeg.2f011282a5371dc21a99d996f7ff2da2.jpeg

image.thumb.jpeg.13e89b267838563fa78d611e6e96ee5c.jpeg

- Don't miss the priority tendering if you tender! It's worth the price of the Haven alone.

- Here's the secret tip: if you want something, tell someone. Ask them. Be polite. We hear a number of times from Haven cruisers they didn't get something. Well, when pressed, it's because they didn't ask. Don't ask for ridiculousness. You're not paying Ritz Carlton prices. But, be specific in your asks. Give enough lead time. And, you'll have the time of your life. I've had four times of my life with my husband onboard a NCL cruise. Could I gripe about small, insignificant things? You betcha! But why? It's a luxurious (not so luxurious as Regent, but who wants to wear a collared shirt to dinner - not this guy is who!) experience and you'll be provided with most anything you'd like.

Ugh, I'm so jealous! I want to go with you. Ten days in the Caribbean, in the Haven. Yes please!

@cruiseny4life - During our getaway cruise in September 22', I remember being at the table next to you when your husband ordered the x+ amount shrimp (to see how many they would serve him) My hubby & I couldn't help but admire the delicious-looking plate of shrimp, and it made my husband request double shrimp cocktails instead of the regular portion. It's a delightful memory from our cruise🎉

Thanks for the tips. It’s funny you mention the American diner embarkation day meal. I heard about it and planned to go against others advice. I figured it would be a nice , causal way to stay a vacation and would be a good place to start the trip with my 2 year old.  Also me and your husband seem to have similar appetites and food preferences.

My oldest cruise memory was being a kid on the Carnival Celebration and on seafood night I ordered 6 shrimp cocktails as my entree.  It was a glorious feast.

We are planning to have lunch at the American diner as well.  I figure the Haven will be extra good if the diner is so so...if you start with low expectations, there more room to go up 🙂

Let the host or maitre d know a day before. It's ok to customize. Get what you want, within reason and with enough notice. Here's a protein plate my husband ordered, followed by my crab cake Eggs Benedict:

- Want more than the prescribed (and pathetic) three shrimp cocktail? Order 13, like my husband does. Order four or five pieces of pork belly. It's freaking good! They only give you two pieces.

Yes please!

Love the FOOD Porn.  Makes me want to stay on my diet before my cruise leave in 100 days just so I can try everything.  I have to tell you, one one picture I LOVED the most was the breakfast.  I LOVE Breakfast on a cruise ship.  Thank you

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.
