Drive Hobart to Launceston?

We are in Hobart overnight on a cruise ; I have done my family tree and found ancestors were deported to Launceston…wondered whether you could drive there and back in a day?   We only have the car for one day!

Yes, you could easily drive there and back in the same day.  It would take just over two and a half hours driving each way without any stops. As long as you have your car booked for the first day, you then have into the evening to travel as well. By the way your ancestors were transported, not deported. There are many convict built buildings and bridges to see as well. Campbell Town, about 50 minutes drive from Launceston is worth stopping at on the way. Many of its old buildings were built by convicts as was the bridge across the river. My husband's convict ancestors lived there at one time. Campbell Town

 

If you decide not to drive to Launceston, I would suggest a visit to Port Arthur, which was a notorious convict prison. Some cruises do call there but not all. Port Arthur

Two of his brothers also were transported but their ship sank before arrival. There is a memorial at Triabubba which looks only an hour away from Hobart- Which would be the more interesting drive/scenery/wineries please? 
It looks like I could do a Triabunna - Campbell Town - Hobart loop?

What was the name of the ship and the brothers' names? The loop of Hobart, Triabunna, Campbell Town, Hobart would take just over 4 hours driving time. Sorry I don't know anything about wineries in the area. I think I would just go to Triabunna and plan your day around that.

Thank you for that. I am always interested in Van Diemen/Tasmanian convicts as both my husband and I have ancestors who were transported to Tasmania. Mine included a father and two sons and a father and son. Husband’s were mother and two daughters, one of whom married another convict.

Only one brother was on the George III, that was Samuel. Two other brothers James and Charles were on the Aurora which sailed from England in June 1835.
