SinbadThePorter Posted September 15, 2023 #1 Share Posted September 15, 2023 (edited) I (along with many others) have often decried the lack of facilities for cruise ships around the Australian coastline, but now it looks like Broome is stepping up with a new port facility called the Kimberley Marine Support Base. https://www.kmsb.com.au/ With a deep water anchorage and a huge floating dock, it should be able to handle almost anything. Building to take place during 2024 and planned to be open in 2025. Edited September 15, 2023 by SinbadThePorter
Rare MicCanberra Posted September 16, 2023 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2023 Good news but I thought most ships could already dock, we certainly did with the Coral.

My first time to Broome by cruise ship will be next year, but from what I gather docking large vessels there is currently limited by the tidal range. "The existing Port of Broome consists of a fixed jetty that is at the mercy of some of Australia’s biggest tides, reaching off the coast into a sea that can rise and fall by 10 metres in just six hours. This has presented challenges when loading and unloading vessels, particularly for live cattle exports to Indonesia, gas rig tenders for the Browse Basin, and cruise ship passengers wanting to visit the historic pearling town."
Rare MicCanberra Posted September 16, 2023 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2023 Yes big tides require gangways to be constantly moved form one level on the ships to the next while docked.
Rare lyndarra Posted September 16, 2023 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2023 When in Broome I would recommend lunch at Matso's ginger beer brewery. Kick back on the verandah and take in the ocean views with a cold ginger beer (or one of the varieties) in hand. https://matsos.com.au/pages/matsos-drinks
