When will RCL spice up their itineraries?

Recommended Posts

Nliedel,

I am talking about St. Thomas. I was a travel agent before I retired and that is NOT the safest port to be wandering around. There are others I am sure, but I know economics are the determining factor. Safety should be the main issue and I thought it was, but I could be wrong.

I'm a former TA too. Till I found out I could make sextuple the money by being a computer trainer, and then the baby explosion happened.

I was just talking to someone last week who was telling me about St' Thomas after dark, obviously this would be a bad choice. I would love to say it was all about safety but I am too much of a cynic to think that's all of it. I don't know when that happened either cause I believe in true love, fair politics and all kinds of fairy tales, for the most part. Big business? Not quite the same attitude.

I'd like to see a different itinerary out of Galveston...why not an Eastern Caribbean route, or Southern...if they can do an Eastern out of NY they sure can do one out of Galveston. Come on, a little variety would be nice!

I agree 100%!!!! I've sailed out of Galveston 5 times now. I would love an Eastern Caribbean route! I've always prefered St Thomas over Cozumel. Bring it on! :)

I do have to hand it to Norwegan Cruise Line and Princess out of Galveston/Houston....Their Western Caribbean itineraries aren't cookie cutter Western itineraries. I'm trying out the Grand Princess in November. I wonder if they would do 8 day cruises out of Galveston to the Eastern Carib? I'll be happy to skip Bahamas too! How about St Thomas, St Marten, and TORTOLA!!! 4 days at sea. I'd be booked immediately.....I've been on the Rhapsody 4 times already but I'd sail her again on that itinerary! ;)

lephysteria..for some reason when you post to a thread it makes it too wide for the screen. It is only on the threads that you post to. I don't know why that is.:)

RCCL and the other cruise lines all pulled their ships back to closer home ports after 9/11. pcur, that grand adventures catalog and the Legend itineraries were from the 2000-2001 season,. Princess has gone back to the more exotic itineraries. I wish RCCL would, too. I think Australia/New Zealand/Tahiti are places we have always wanted to visit and can finally afford to.:)

OT: Nliedel, you write funny when you are on drugs, little green men in the front yard, hmm and you are usually such a good speller. :D

I think part of the reason the ships don't stay in port late is because it isn't safe for tourists to be wandering about after dark. I know there are islands where it is safe and the ships (Southern Caribbean or Panama Canal) stay late, ie Aruba. (I don't want to get in a discussion of Natalee either.)

Silkiegirl,

I resent the remark that the ships leave port because of old people. I am 65 and love cruising as much as people in their 30s and I am not in a rush to leave a port. I think you have some growing up to do yet, and when you get to be "older" I think your opinions will change, at least hopefully so.

I have done land based trips all over the Caribbean. Although in any locale, one should be responsible and aware of their surroundings, I have never had a problem going out at night. I have greatly enjoyed the nightlife on some islands.

I am also a runner and, on most islands (St Thomas was an exception) was perfectly comfortable doing my early moring solo runs.

The reason that most ships do not stay in port overnight is $$$. There is big profit in alcohol, casino, etc. and if pax have an option to be in port, many will take it.

I love RCI - it's the cruiseline we've taken for our last 5 cruises. But I'd like to go on MORE cruises, and if the itineraries of the other lines take me to some different places out of Florida, I'm going to take a hard look at those.

Life is short, and I love to travel. 3rd time on Grand Caymen.... yawn.

Pretty hard to get the "WOW! we're going to NASSAU!!" feeling after the 5th or 6th time, too.

That $797 balcony to the Southern Caribbean sounds fantastic!

I also agree that they should test the waters with a longer cruise to the Southern Caribbean out of Miami. I'd rather spend the money on the cruise than airfare, and flying to San Juan really increases the price.

Oh, yeah! I just pulled out the Grand Adventures brochure I kept from 2000- 2001. Wow, I would love them to go back to these. They just didn't get the pax on them, I guess.

Barrier Reef and Down Under

Asian Pearls and Ancient Mariners (Thailand, Singapore, India)

Journey of the Spice Traders and Ebony and Gold (they had to avoid the Red Sea area, I guess)

These were all on the LOS.

We were on the last Legend cruise in 2003 when it left New Zealand for the last time. That is why I went on HAL last year.

We just booked an Orient tour on Princess - I would definitely book with RCCL if they had the cruise instead. We would also love to go to Australia/New Zeland. Again, we'll probably book with Princess or HAL for that one - only because RCCL doesn't go there!

I just wish St. Thomas and St. Maarten were not on so many itineraries. Other than the Western routes it is pretty impossible to do an RCI caribbean sailing, Eastern and Southern, with out stops at these two ports. I think they are great ports but I'd like to stop some place new.

Cure for the common cruise....repositioning cruises. I know these are not an option for a lot of people because of the time of year they take place. However, if you can cruise in the fall or spring, they are worth looking into. The prices are usually very good when they are released for booking. Plus, the length and itinerary change is also attractive. We did our first repo-cruise in `03 on the Serenade...9 nights, Philly to San Juan. Doing another in Nov. Explorer of the Seas, 9 nights, Cape Liberty to Miami with stops in Labadee, Curcao and Aruba.

You can do a search on the RCI site for the ships that are doing summer cruises out of northeast ports (Boston, Bayonne and Baltimore) for the times when they switch to Caribbean itineraries...Oct/Nov.
