LondonTowner Posted October 21, 2023 #1 Share Posted October 21, 2023 We will be docking in Hamburg in November, but I understand the Euribia docks in Scheinwerder and there isn’t much there. Can anybody tell me if MSC have a shuttle to the centre or if there is a port shuttle? Thank you
Heartgrove Posted October 21, 2023 #2 Share Posted October 21, 2023 Yes, MSC uses Steinwerder and there is not much there. We were on the MSC Preziosa last month to Scotland and Ireland and embarked/disembarked from there. Because there were three adults, we used taxis both ways to and from the Hauptbahnhof. The two fares were €32-33. But there was an hourly shuttle with MSC from the Hauptbahnhof for €10/pp. We had just missed one so elected to use the taxi in place of waiting an hour. I'm not sure if they were running it the day we disembarked.
Rare insidecabin Posted October 21, 2023 #3 Share Posted October 21, 2023 Hamburg on a Sunday even less going on everywhere. no public transport near the port. If late November the Xmas markets will have started. Last winter(Virtuosa) the MSC shuttle was €18pp. You can walk through Elbe tunnel and link up with public transport
stephenp Posted October 22, 2023 #4 Share Posted October 22, 2023 On Sunday 8th October the Shuttle bus ran every 40 Mins. and cost Euro 12 per Adult and 10 per child. The first bus to Hamburg was at 7.30am and the last bus from Hamburg was at 7pm.
gazzas127 Posted October 22, 2023 #5 Share Posted October 22, 2023 Hi stephenp was that 12 Euro each way or return for the shuttle in Hamburg?
showingdiva Posted October 22, 2023 #6 Share Posted October 22, 2023 Just back from Euribia. It's 12 euros for a return trip. Drops off / picks up by the station. Takes about 25 minutes each way. Hamburg is like a giant construction site. There is nothing around the Steinwerder terminal, and even if there was, because so many embark / disembark in Hamburg, it's busy ... unlike the city. There is nothing doing on a Sunday (especially a wet one). Sorry if I'm not selling it, but if (and it's a big if) I went back, would do an excursion instead.

We have visited Hamburg before, so if the weather is bad we may stay on the ship.
Stocksy82 Posted October 22, 2023 #8 Share Posted October 22, 2023 Were you waiting around much for the transfer @showingdiva?

From the ship side, only waited 5 minutes for the bus. The bus park is undercover. From the city, again no. Walked out of nearby Starbucks and two buses arrived at the same time and got on the first after others had got off. In fairness, it had stopped raining by that point.
kofferradio Posted October 23, 2023 #10 Share Posted October 23, 2023 Only shops are closed on Sunday. All tourist spots are open, of course. There is so much to do in Hamburg, but you need to do your research in advance as the city is big and you will need public transportation to reach the spots. Hop on Hopp off is available and might also be an option. - Elbphilharmonie (concert hall with a very nice terrace) - Michel (church) - Landungsbrücken - harbour cruise - Miniatur Wunderland - Hamburg Dungeon - Reeperbahn - city hall - chocoversum - Dialog in the dark - Alter Elbtunnel (small tunnel under the elbe river to the citycenter, can be reached by foot from the terminal) ... Staying on the ship in a city like Hamburg would never be an option for me.
Heartgrove Posted October 23, 2023 #11 Share Posted October 23, 2023 Another activity to do in Hamburg is to ride the HADAG Linie 62 ferry. This runs from Landungsbrucken to Finkenwerder and is a good inexpensive replacement for the harbor sightseeing boats, Depending on the amount of time in port (or if you are spending a day or two in Hamburg), Miniatur Wunderland can be reached by Linie 6 bus. Around the corner is the Linie 111 bus that you can ride to Lanungsbrucken for the ferry.
Mutumbojimbo Posted October 26, 2023 #12 Share Posted October 26, 2023 We docked in Hamburg on Oct. 15. It was 12 Euros for the Shuttle that dropped us off at a mall near the city hall. We took a hop on / hop off bus. We rode it around the loop, then got off at St. Michael's. The church was beautiful. We walked down to the Elbphilharmonie, then used the pedestrian tunnel under the Elbe to walk back, but we could have taken the bus back to the shuttle. LondonTowner Posted October 26, 2023 Author #13 Share Posted October 26, 2023 Lots of good recommendations of things to see and do. We normally get off at 3very port no matter how many times we’ve previously visited. However, from my research the day we are there, 26 November is not only a Sunday, but also a religious holiday. we were hoping the Christmas Market would be open in front of the Rathaus, but, apparently it’s not. we may still go into the centre, but we have visited before.

Yes, Nov 26th is "Sunday of the Death" which is a so called "quiet day". Therefore the Christmas markets are not allowed to open. No singing, no dancing, no other fun activities on that day to honor the death. steamboats

Been in Hamburg on this day also before. Not even playing football is allowed. So by far the best option would be to do the ferry number 62 trip that was mentioned above. You probably have done this already, but others can consider.
