A few notes about the Discovery Jan 6-13

Really bummed to hear no chicken korma. My favorite thing about lunch. Did I see you mention that the gastropub is one of the included "specialty" restaurants that are included in the Plus package? I assumed it was just Gigi's

Gigis, Gastropub, and Ocean Terrace.

Discovery has a lot of options and makes casual dining a great alternative to MDR and buffet. Can’t wait to test the limits.

What is Ocean Terrace? I've been on the Discovery twice & am not familiar. Is Gastropub open at lunch?

MDR lunch menus do change.  The last two items on the right side of the menu do change.   We only ate there once but we had two different menus.  One was the menu from the day before.

I'm sailing the pacific coastal 7 day cruise on Discovery 4/20-27. Anyone know what nights are likely to be formal nights?

Just check the app. It will list the daily activities. Scroll through Journey View (old app) or simply Journey (new app) and find the days that say Formal Portraits. Those are the formal nights.

I hear what you are saying about the Chicken Korma.  That was my favorite as well.

The Gastropub is a casual dining venue, along with the sushi place and GiGi’s.  Each of their price fixed menus was $14.99 and way too much food for one person.  You can also order a la carte plates in each of these venues.

The specialty dining venues are The Catch by Rudi, the Crown Grill and Sabatini’s.
I know thy had a pop up in the GastroPub location for lunch on two of the sea days and believe it counted as specialty dining.  I believe it is around $39 pp and was staffed with the crew from the Catch.

The Ocean Terrace serves sushi and is located right before entering the casino.  They were open for lunch on sea days and then throughout dinner hours every day.
The GastroPub opens at 5 PM every day .. no lunch.
As mentioned, they do use the location for pop up specialty dining at lunch on some sea days.

Salty Dog only serves their menu at dinner. Ocean terrace is open for lunch on sea days, and all days for dinner. It's not to be missed.

Suspect Crab Shack popup is to get through the many specialty dining on premier packages owed.

I kind of thought the same thing.
Then, I saw someone that had commented that it wasn’t accepted as one of the two specialty dining options included with the premier package.  I can’t verify that, though.
I would just love it if those specialty dining options were available at lunch time, with the real menu and not the pop ups.

Thanks. So two of us can go to the gastropub & split one price fix and only use one "casual specialty"  dinner?

I've read in several places that if you go to the casual specialty restaurant, they make you burn 2 of your Plus Package included casual dinners even if you want to split one.  For example, if my wife and I go to Gigi's and want to split a pizza (and the other stuff) they will still charge us for 2.  It seems really unfair.  It's also unfair that you only get 2 on a 14 day cruise and on a 7 day cruise and you still have to pay the same daily rate on both cruises for Plus.

We figured since neither of us can eat a whole pizza, we could get 4 visits instead of two ... alas.

Ok, thanks. We are  doing a 4 day - still isn't clear as to how many we get on that. I'm wondering if I go in alone & order & my husband comes in after I get served if they can try to charge him!

I think you get 2 each regardless of the cruise length.

I asked that very question at the GastroPub on the Ruby and they said no.  You’d each be charged the $14.99.  But then, some people posted on here that they were allowed to do so.  So, I really don’t have a set in stone answer for you.

They do have la carte options starting at $6 a plate.  Sometimes, that’s all I want to eat.  It’s actually better than it used to be with a cover charge of $18 pp.

They take down your cabin number and list if you have the standard, plus or premier on their sheet when you walk in.  Not sure what they would do but if you are both at the table and eating, I’d be prepared to pay for two meals.

@Cruise Raider Was the Pop up Crab lunch listed anywhere, or was it only something you could find if you happen to see it that day?

Thanks for the report!

It was listed in the Patter and then, because we are in the piazza in the morning, we noticed everything being set up.  Uvidou, who is the maitre’d for the Catch, also runs the Crab Shack with his crew.  Best guy ever!
