madera1 Posted January 31 #1 Share Posted January 31 We will be staying in Rotterdam May 9-11 precruise. We will not have a car but just want to view/photograph tulip fields. I understand that the tulip festival will be still in progress but wondered if there may be some tulip fields closer to Rotterdam.
Rare gnome12 Posted January 31 #2 Share Posted January 31 In my experience, the tulips in the tulip fields are cut fairly early, because it is the bulbs that are the most important exports. You are going to be there pretty close to, if not past, the end of the season. Note that Keukenhof isn't really a tulip festival, it is a garden exhibit. Unlike the commercial tulip fields, Keukenhof is designed for viewing the flowers.
Dutch_Travelgirl Posted January 31 #3 Share Posted January 31 Not sure what you mean by the “tulip festival”, but it’s highly unlikely there will still be tulips in bloom in the flower fields. The flowers of the tulips are cut off by the tulip farmers to ensure that the plant uses all its energy to produce healthy bulbs instead of maintaining the flower. The cutting or heading is usually done in the first week of May, so if you’re here from May 9 onwards you’re too late.
Ine Posted January 31 #4 Share Posted January 31 Probably the only place you will still find some tulips is Keukenhof. It is open till May 12. As others mention it is too late in the season to see fields. https://keukenhof.nl/en/
