Sardinia, Italy beach access from port

We are cruising 10-day Mediterrean from Barcelona in June, with a port itinerary in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. We've never been to this port, and wondering if anyone has done this cruise, is it possible to walk to a nice beach from the port? We are early 60s, excellent health and capable of walking a few miles. Also wondering about the ease of navigating to the beach (directions/geography not our strength).

with a port itinerary in Cagliari,

Cagliari has some beautiful beaches a short distance from the port.

There have been a few past threads for Cagliari, and reading some of them should give you info and suggestions for your day.  Choose from these:

Looks like we can find a beach easily on our own.

Absolutely, but you may be better going to one by taxi or by public bus, especially if it is a hot weather day as that would not be a pleasant walk.

Should you decide that an ntire day on the beach is too long  and decide to spend some of your day exploring a little of the historic area, this link has two posts worth reading by pax who explored independently  and should help you with your planning.

You said,

If you are reluctant to use public buses, uses taxis instead.

For anyone (like me) who isn't a beach person, Cagliari offers easy access to a really nice historic site -- it's about a 40-45 minute drive from Cagliari.

The site, Nora, has a long, long history dating back to the early Sardinians that built the stone nuraghe. But later it became a Punic (Carthaginian) trading outpost and town and later still it was taken over by the Romans when they took the island of Sardinia off the hands of the Carthaginians...

The site is very pretty (see here for some photos), especially in the slanting afternoon sun. Don't go expecting another Pompeii, but it does have standing walls (pretty substantial in some cases, like the Roman baths), well preserved floor mosaics that are still in place, and also some interesting Carthaginian features that you don't see often, such as a temples to Carthaginian gods and a cemetery with inscriptions.

I understand that there are mosaics and remains of the site underwater as well -- it is perched right on the beach -- and that they offer a snorkeling tour of these during summer months, but I haven't done it.

There is also a great archaeological museum in Cagliari itself.

The link given above provides directions by local bus, or you can arrange with a taxi. There are also local tours.
