One thing that I have noticed on CC which is not a good or a bad thing, is that when a particular Cruiser is loyal to one or two brands, you cannot say anything negative about the brand without a "fight" of sorts.  I use the term fight loosely.

I have watched some folks venture into the Viking Ocean forum and say something negative after their first experience and be "beaten down" for that comment...  using beaten down loosely too!...

Regarding "beaten down" or Disruptive/Offensive/Member Directed Posts, please remember Cruise Critic does not review messages before they are posted and cannot read through the thousands of messages posted each day. We depend on all Cruise Critic members for help.

As stated in the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships, "We encourage you to utilize the reporting system built into the board system; you'll find a Report a Post icon located in the upper right hand corner of the posting. Use it! We will review the report and take appropriate action."

If you see any posts or threads on any Cruise Critic forums that are off-topic or violate any of the Guidelines, just click the ellipsis (the three dots next to the post number) for options. A list will appear. Click Report so the Report post screen will open. If it is a whole thread that needs to be reported, click the ellipsis on the first post in the thread for the Report post screen to open.

You will see a list for Why do you want to report this? If your reason is one of the reasons listed, click the radio button next to the reason. If it is not listed, just type your message about the problem post into the Report post text box where it says, "Optionally enter a message with your report." The text box is often helpful when your report may need further explanation.

When done with your message, click Submit Report. Your part is done at that point. Please do not quote or reply to the reported post. Your quote or reply post as well as any other posts or quotes concerning the reported post or thread will be removed from sight along with the reported post.

User Reported Content list of reports is generated for review to all volunteer Hosts and paid Administrators. The reports will automatically show the important information they MUST have such as the forum name, thread title or post in addition to your message.

The Hosts or Administrators will review your Report post report when they can. I say "when they can" because all e-mails and Report post reports to Cruise Critic are answered in order of receipt. With almost two million members sending reports 24/7 from all over the world, please be patient for any action. Also, please remember the Hosts are non-paid volunteers and work the boards when their real life permits. Most Administrators work regular weekday business hours.

I sincerely hope this information will be helpful to anyone reading this thread.

Happy sails,

Host Kat

Yes, not uncommon for one person to say best time ever and someone else on the same cruise says "never again".

There is one particular ship from one of the cruise lines we prefer that is subject to a lot of negative comments on these forums.  We enjoyed that ship immensely and would look forward to going again.  I sometimes wonder if these things take on a life of their own on the forums.

In one of the cruise line forums I frequent, there's a common saying that there must be two ships with the same name doing the same cruises because of the differences in experiences between people on the same voyage.

Just keep in mind that the mass market cruise lines are all about "maximizing onboard revenue."  For whatever reason, some cruisers let down their "common sense guard" once aboard a ship and spend, spend, spend!  After all, you do not need cash or even a credit card...just your cruise card. Medallion, wrist band, etc.

You control your expenditures on a cruise.  Yes, you can spend hundreds of dollars on alternative dining, fine wine,  pieces of art, excursions, etc.  On the other hand, you can easily minimize your onboard expenditures and still have a great cruise.  Want to go to an art auction?  Go, but do not buy anything!  Want to browse the jewelry shop?  Go ahead and browse, but keep your cruise card in your purse or pocket.  Want to have photo memories?  Take out your phone and shoot away....but do not spend hundreds of dollars at the ship's photo gallery.

By the way, it is interesting to note some differences between the mass market lines and the very upscale small ship luxury lines.  On lines like Seabourn and Silversea you will not see any art auctions, ship photographers,  add-on upcharges in the dining room,, etc.  While the folks who are on those luxury ships obviously have the personal resources to shop, many also have the common sense to NOT.  A friend likes to point out that many of the folks on the most expensive luxury lines, are able to afford those lines because they know how to say NO.
