From the Crystal website FAQ section:

 

Formal Evening

 

On sailings over seven days, there will be at least one optional ship-wide formal night (depending on the length of the segment), which will require more formal cocktail chic attire. These special events will be defined in your personal pre-sailing guide.

Pat, I just want to mention that while the norm is to have a formal night on an eight night cruise, there have been instances when this was not the case due to the itinerary.  I believe in those cases there was not a sea day.  So if you don't have a sea day you may want to write to on-board guest services a couple of months before the cruise to verify this.
