Mediterranean Weather in October

Recommended Posts

Travelling on Arvia mid October taking in Le Harve, Vigo, Lisbon and La Coruna.  Asking if anyone has been on a similar trip at that time of the year and what weather to expect?

My wife has lupus and has to stay out of the sun, hence an October trip.  Having looked at a variety of web sites there is very much a mixed message about the weather ranging from 50f - 70f whilst a YouTube stream for October 23 showed it was  decidedly sunny, shorts and tee shirt weather.

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

From those ports, it doesn't sound like you will be to be going into the Med but going down the Atlantic coast, so probably less warm and more unsettled than in the Med, maybe similar to southern England in early September. I'd think that temperatures in the 60s F would be most likely, possibly warmer if you're lucky. By that time of the year it's likely to be less settled than in high summer. Of course the further south you go the better it's likely to be.

We like to go to the Med in late Sept/Oct and have had everything from hot to wet and windy while travelling up and down the coast of Portugal Spain and France. Last October on Aurora it was lovely and sunny from day one from Southampton until coming back where we had three wet and windy days force 9/10 from Gib.

October/November does have a bit of a reputation for rough seas in The Atlantic, so that could be a problem, but alternatively could be lovely weather. as others have said.  Having said that, Arvia is a big ship and may not rock about so much as smaller ships, which are what we use and should be plenty of things to do onboard.

Highly unlikely to be anything like as good as the Med at that time of year though.

We've enjoyed several similar cruises over recent years and your research seems to have been spot on.

In Vigo it's very variable. the coldest that we've had has been down about 13˚C (about 55˚F... so a bit like much of the UK is experiencing at the moment, and the best has been in the very low 20˚Cs (about 70˚F)... so a pleasant summer day. It's just as variable in the other ports but it's likely to be a little cooler. (Today Vigo is about 5˚F warmer than Southampton.)

On deck the windchill is likely to take the temps down by 3˚F or 4˚C.

October tends to be one of the wetter months and we would expect rain perhaps one day out of three... but, of course, that doesn’t mean that it will be fine three days in a row.

We tend to pack the essentials for a fine late spring day in the south of England, add warm base layers, a light waterproof jacket... and, for all eventualities and to make sure that we're comfy, a warm hat, scarf and even thin gloves... just in case.

Like most folk above have said, the weather on your proposed route is changeable... just as changeable as we would expected it to be in Cornwall  or South Wales at the same time of the year... just possibly a tad warmer.

Having said all of that we've had some really good interludes on that route at the time of year that you're travelling.... so hope that you do as well.
